Forums - Sony Discussion - Uncharted 4 single player is a disappointment (Spoilers)

It took Uncharted in a more human direction, and thematically, toning down the setpieces makes total sense. And in this case it makes for, bar none, the best paced game Naughty Dog has ever made. The pacing in 1 and 3 was pretty bad and in 2 it was decent, but here I never wanted to stop playing.

Plus, with setpieces comes a need to develop around them. They already jumped the shark in many ways with 3, and the last bit of story suffered with bullet sponge filler to make up for putting so much of the resources into the big setpieces. In 4 the game is longer AND better paced and balanced, which is almost unheard of for a fourth game in any series.

A more human direction? I qualify that as a game attempting to be a movie. The Last of Us was very enjoyable but it felt like a poor man's The Road storywise. Uncharted 4 was built around the Last of Us' receptions. I'd rather they built it around set pieces.

The game is only longer because you walk around a lot.

I also dislike that a bad guy got to live happily ever after. And the lack of supernatural element.

Disagree. It does have a slow start, but the overall game is fantastic.

No,I really enjoy the game.

Yeah, it is. But it's also a disappointment to me. And honestly, Drake deciding to retire because Elena wants her to is kinda absurd.

I enjoyed the set pieces the most in this game, it felt like they had their own pacing and gradually built up.

I know a lot of people felt they weren't as big, but I see it as an evolution of the previous games where they were longer, incorporated better into the story and puzzle / platforming sections.

As for the Nathan quitting because of Elena, I think you missed the point of why he left it all behind. 3 times he put his life and his friends on the line. 3 times people he knew died, was betrayed, almost died himself and he walked away with very little if anything to show for it. The 4th game even has it as a plot line and part of Nate's development and growing up as a character.

As for longer levels due to exploration, that is entirely optional. It is entirely possible to play it linear without any exploration, but to get more from the story, the exploration pays off similar to TLOU, via exploring the story hidden in the surroundings, additional conversions and collectibles.

As far as many games go these days, many people will be disappointed in any or every game. Everyone has their opinion on how it could have been better, how the story should have been etc.

This is a class example where the developer addressed every issue that was brought up:

1) deeper story
2) putting an end to the supernatural final act
3) linear level design
4) better stealth and combat
5) more exploration
6) not create a game around set pieces as they felt shoe horned in part 3

I finished it and of course i loved it it's amazing it took me 19 hours and 23 minutes to finish it .. more than nineteen hours!! that's like UC2 and 3's campaign combined so i can't wait to go back and play it again but i wanna play through UC2 and 3 again you know just to see how they compare i'm playing Among Thieves now and i have to tell you it's a complete joke compared to A Thief's End. You guys don't believe me ? play the older games right after you finish UC4 and you'll see.. the nostalgia goggles needs to be taken off.

It's odd because I thought it had more set pieces than the previous games. Perhaps you didn't notice them because they were on the stick.

The PS5 Exists.

It met my expectations. Only weird thing was that at certain parts i felt dizzy from vertigo. That has never happened before.

Otherwise i don't agree with Lawlight. I guess that could be taken as a general statement and not just this thread.

Uncharted 4 is a more intimate affair. Setpiece scale has been toned down for a more believable story, but the Madagascar chase in particular is easily the most technically impressive, interactive, and just plain fun of the series. Like 2 before it, there is now a better balance between such moments and the storytelling, only this time with much more substance and nuance to the writing. If you really found its story basic, I can't imagine what you thought of previous entries. And repetitive? Fucking what? That's entirely on you if you're serious, because the series gameplay has never been more varied.

Haven't got round to it yet, but that sounds encouraging to me. I thought there was too much shooting in the previous games and it just got annoying. So if there's less of that then I'm all for it

Exactly!!!

Trust me, you'll be in for a treat. Do not listen to the OP - Uncharted 4 is a freakin masterpiece! It juist goes to show you how opinions can vary. based on what he said, it's like he played an entgirely different game to me. It's BY FAR the best in the series and I'm not even nowhere near finished yet. I wanna savour the greatness and not rush through it.
