The microtransactions in Overwatch, are the same as GTA V's. You just buy the lootboxes. So you don't have to waste time unlocking. This is for lazy people, who have no will power. Or people who don't have the time. Everything can be unlocked by just playing the game. I got the GTA V Cargo Plane. By playing the 2 player heist, for a month. To just get the 2 million.
If you can do that. You can unlock everything in Overwatch. Hell, Overwatch is a lot fare. BEcause you can win in game money to buy the unlocks too. And if you get a duplicate unlock. You get money, as offset. I've unlocked 10 things for Zarya. With in-game money.

Important gameplay aspects will also never be locked behind a price point, it's all cosmetic

So it should. Because there isn't enough game for the asking price, simple as that.
Same thing went for Halo 5, for a Halo game it featured less than it's predecessors (I.E. No Forge, not many maps etc'), so the updates had better be free.
Still zero need for Microtransactions other than it being a cash grab... It also leaves room for Microtransactions to be expanded upon in future patches so that it plays a larger role in the game.

It's online only WITH Microtransactions at a $100 AUD price point, it's main and active competitor is actually Team Fortress 2... A free to play title. There isn't even many game modes or maps either.
Anyway, I'm personally bored with Overwatch now, so it's likely shelved untill new content comes out... I have far to many games to be playing than to keep playing the same old Multiplayer, the population will plummet with this game.

Microtransactions are all cosmetic (you should know if you played the game. New characters, game modes, and maps are coming free of charge. The price point actually prevents hackers, and unless you plan to play a really old game, overwatch is the only one of its kind right now.
Population is not gonna plummet anytime soon

It's still a money grab, it's still Microtransactions and it still shouldn't even be in a game that isn't even full-featured and fleshed out.
A couple of game modes and a dozen maps isn't worth the full asking price, same went with Titanfall, StarWars Battlefront, Evolve. etc'.
And yes. I do know. I do own the game.
Overwatch is a rarity in console land, you do have competitive titles like Battleborn and Team Fortress 2 in the Orange Box. - Not PC, on PC, games like this are on almost every virtual street corner, you have Battleborn, Team Fortress 2, Fortnite, Dirty bomb, Gigantic, Battlecry, LawBreakers, Paladins, Paragon, Super MNC and many more.
Overwatch ranks up near the top in terms of balance and overall presentation, but in many aspects games like Team Fortress 2 still have the edge in many aspects and will continue to do so for the near future. Oh and it's actually free.
