if esports were an actial sport then anybody playing video games would be playing sports as well. so no, its not a sport, its the very opposite. you sit on your ass just looking at a screen.

That's like saying because race walking is a sport then anyone going for a stroll or walking the dog is playing a sport.  Because Javelin is a sport, any time you throw a stick you are doing sport. And because boxing, kickboxing, judo, UFC etc are sports then every time you get into a fight you are playing a sport.

Clearly you can be doing the same sort of activity and in one context it's a sport, in another context it is not.

Not all physical activity is a sport, and not all video gaming is sport. One of the key components of a sport is that it is a competition between at least 2 people. So clealy if you are playing a single player game then you are by definition not doing sport, or even an esport.

I signed the Whitehouse petition, and I think most people in this thread should too, even if you don't think esports are sports, because it's actuall a petition about making easier for competitive gamers to get Visas to come into the USA for competitions. And I think making visa access easier for professional competitive gamers is a good thing regadless of this sports debate.

I can game with a beer on one side, whiskey on the other and a bowl of chips and dip. This is not sports.

You've just described darts and bowling, you are even sitting on your arse for the majority of the time the match is happening.

People play drunk football, baseball etc, casually all the time. And in any case, you can't, and wouldn't, do that if you were playing the game with a $100,000 purse on the line.

I consider it a sport, just not the type of sport that will make your body completely fit or whatever.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

They are an activity, like golf ot bowling.. they do require skills, this is not derogatory, not everything is a sport... otherwise, making the dishes in a competitive manner would be considered a "sport"😭

I'd say so... Many consider Chess being a sport but that doesn't require much physical effort. I find esports more entertaining than many "real" sports, specially stuff like sc2

Oh! Never really considered If Chess is a sport or not. Regardless that is a good point!

Thankyou! I like how you explained it.

If walking and Basketball is a sport, then Esports can be too.

You can be casual and play games casually just as you can dribble a basketball casually.

You can sit in a chair and do basketball as you can do games.

You can 5v5 competitively just as you can in games.

And if you really felt like it, you an stand up and play games and do jumping jacks but that would probably make you bad competitively just as in the middle of a basketball game.

The list goes on.

Is cheerleading a sport?

I wouldn't say eSports is a 'true' sport but that doesn't mean it's not relevant or anything.. but honestly, I don't really think it matters :p
