Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Next Big Step for 3D Mario?

It just needs to be a true Mario sequel. No New Super Mario, no Mario sunshine, no 3D Land, STOP with the spinoffs! Give us Super Mario Galaxy 3.

The real legitimate core Mario games are:
1. Super Mario Bros.
2. Super Mario 3 - yes, 2 wasn't a real Super Mario game, it was Doki Doki Panic.
3. Super Mario World
4. Super Mario 64
5. Super Mario Galaxy
6. Super Mario Galaxy 2

It needs to be the next game on this list.

I'm gonna go against Galaxy 3 unless they make the path less linear. Galaxy 2 was fun but I don't think I want the return of 3D Mario Adventure to be another Galaxy. Maybe make Galaxy 3 afterwards.

Also the 3D series are fun but if Nintendo can't do 3D Adventure, 3DLand/World, and 2D side scroller in one gen I rather they take out 3D World/Land out.

Or they can make another new IP that plays like 3D adventure Mario since Mario was usually linear in 2D.

I just want the Mario 64/Mario Galaxy formula back honestly. Things like having a hub world, collecting stars and having no time limit are essential. If they do another 3D Land/World style game I'll be sad =(

I just want another 3d Mario like 64, pls Nintendo. Maybe one where Mario travels across time or across dimensions idk

You are missing Super Mario Bros 2:  The Lost Levels :P

Also, aside from the controls, in what way is Super Mario 3D World a Spinoff and Galaxy not?  In fact, what makes Sunshine a spinof?  The fact you don't like them?  Galaxy has plenty of gimicks in design.  And frankly, 3D World is the first Mario game of any kind of 3D variety to get power ups *RIGHT* cause one major problem with Galaxy 1 and 2 and even 64 is that there are either not many powerups (64) or the powerups are just level-specific, flavor of the day gimmics that just serve as progress keys.

I can understand the argument that 3D World isn't a true 3D Mario.  I don't agree but I do understand.  Calling it a spinoff that isn't an entry in the mainline console series is an indefensible argument made based on arbitrary values designed to exclude undesired (rather than unwarranted) entries in the list.

Mario Sunshine was related to Luigi's Haunted Mansion, and Super Mario 3D World was the sequel to Super Mario 3D Land. These games also didn't receive the same kind of creative attention as the core Mario titles, they were of lesser quality. But you're right about Lost Levels, the problem is that game never came out here until a long time after it was relevant.

Its time to let 2D mario die.

3D Adventure mario (64, galaxy) & 3D World, are what nintendo needs to do.

Leave the 2D platforming to donkey kong country, they do it better than mario these days anyways.

^ I believe most people want that.

The question is if nintendo listens to its audience?

Online multiplayer, of course.

I really hope thats sarcasm.

Not at all.  If Mario wants to be considered among the "it" titles in today's market, an online element is necessary.  There was mild discontent expressed when there was no online in NSMBU and SM3DW. This will grow in the next generation.  All major flagship Nintendo and non-Nintendo titles pretty much need online now.

For 3D Mario I would have a Vs mode, where you collect items and use them against each other.  A unique take on third person shooter where it's not really a shooter.  More like classic SNES Super Mario Kart where you find an item and then use it against another player.  But not one use items, I'm talking Fire Flowers, etc.  Taking a hit makes you lose it and you need to find another to fight again.  All in a 3D arena from the Mario universe.  It could be amazing, and would generate a strong reaction when revealed.  You would also hear people say that Nintendo is entering modern gaming, which is a good thing.

Online campaign could work too, but it would take careful implementation.  But an online mode could enable more flexibility for quest level design that was restricted a bit in SM3DW.

In all honesty, there is no downside to adding more features to a game.  It doesn't need to ruin the single- or local multiplayer experience.
