Forums - Sony Discussion - Uncharted 4 gameplay shot. Naughty Dog is edging closer to the uncanny valley

I hate to do this but...

You know, at times, Quantum Break pulled this off, too. It didn't have the variety of U4 nor the rain, mud, gravel etc but there were definitely several moments where I paused and said "This looks too good!"

U4 is really on another level but it's not the only game that could possibly fool people with a screenshot.

Thats the funny thing, I had to stop the game because the gameplay was so good looking. The picture I posted doesnt even do it justice. Not just once either, but but many times. The verticality in this game while climbing is probably second only to Shadow of the Colossus and the amount of shots I had to stop and take were ridiculous. I took quite a few shots of Tomb Raider, but mainly at the cave area. Quantum Break was very grainy and because of the effects constantly affected the graphics of the game. It was like it was trying to shift between 720 and 900p. Very rarely in uncharted did I realize any dips.

I can't tell what's going on in that screen shot. Is there some sort of energy beam or something coming out of Nathaniel? Looks bizarre.

Hes climbing in the middle of a thunder storm. He cant do his usual jumps because he cant get his bearings like normally would when its try. You kind of just have to move around cautiously. Just wow...utterly amazing. I've never seen effects like that while climbing before.

You're not kidding. the physics in this game with hill slides are great. You truly feel like Nathan is taking a level of abuse from falling down on it as well. They did a great job of keeping the effects cohesive with the voice acting because he complains about it in the game.

They're very good at what they do and the game is rather linear. That combination can yield some great graphics.

Not sure that screenshot is all THAT impressive though... I suppose the leaves look nice but the water and texture are meh.

There were few "open world" parts that looked as good if not better than some of the linear parts. That screenshot in the Op wasn't amazing. The rain (in photo mode) was just a 2D sheet. It still looks good but there are tons of moments that looked better, imo.

Interesting. Can you show me a picture of an action game thats graphics were as good as the photo I showed? I understand that the moment might not be that great to you but I personally have never seen a game look that pretty during a storm in action. I do agree that there were greater momenets, but this is just one moment of many other moments ive already shown of this game on VGChartz.

Someone pointed out that they need some sort of limitation in order for it to be as optimized as possible. In other words the PS4 can do way more than a similarly speced PC because it can be optimized on a level that PC games cannot.  So while they are brilliant,  being on a closed platform really helps.

It's why all PC games look like garbage forver would be my guess.

PC games have the platform to be very pretty but not always the development costs. Since 2005 the financial shift has been in the court of consoles. ID even spoke about the prospect of consoles value and profitabiolity way back when, but now it seems that PC is having a resurgence which has come with a lot of indy games. Last gen we saw the fallout of what AAA games can do to an industry. This is why fewer risks are being taken unless the companys pedigree is really high.

Madagascar was my favorite place visually. Though there were a lot of great areas to the game.

Agreed. Im on chapter 15 so we will see if theres anymore greatness to be found. :)

honestly I agree. Quantum Break really succeeds in creating an almost invisible line between reality and gamepay.

I played the game and experienced numerous issues including tearing and graphics dips. It killed the immersion in a major way. Its like they were liberally forced by microsoft to try to get this game to shift between 720 and 900p so that Microsoft could make it seem like the console could handle the game. I suggest they build of of this great foundation though. I have a feeling that the second Quantum Break might be the quite the charmer. If the game is going to be more technically demanding than the first I suggest Remedy gets to know the Xbox One architecture a little more like Naughty Dog did with the PS3. At the end of the generation ND admitted to being held back by the PS3 hardware and this new Uncharted speaks volumes about that truth. Glad you liked Quantum Break. I need to do a second playthrough.

Naughty Dog just set apart from the other developers.

True. They get millions of dollars more to develop their games...

Its not just that. There is a reason why they are setting themselves apart from even other AAA developers. What they did with the limited hardware of the PS3 was insane. Those were masterworks for such limited hardware.

They only work on that hardware though. Just like Nintendo usually makes the best looking games for their own console.

Not taking anything away from ND, their games are gorgeous.

Uncharted 1-3 cost less to develop than the Tomb raider reboot by quite a margin.
