Forums - Movies & TV - X-men: Apocalypse - Thoughts

So as a Marvel fanboy, when it comes to the Marvel films, I am spoiler free so coming into this film all I knew was the name and some of the chartacers.... the massive advert poster outside my local cinema giving most away. Maybe spoilers incoming.

Let's start with my fanboy stuff and get it out of the way. Apocalypse was a tiny thing. I mean real small, not the 10 feet monster he is in the comics. Apocalypse can take on the Hulk and shrug it off but they changed him alot. Psylocke...yeah a american accented 'filler' character nothing like her actualy character in the comics other than she's asian and where's nearly nothing. Munn might have been a alright casting (See Gemma Chan for a better casting and correct accent) but the role was pathetic. Jubilee was underused. Angel... 2 attempts at getting Angel from the comics to the big screen and both times they fail... badly. Storm and origin was fine. There is an astral plane battle at the end...kinda and they didn't put astral armour on Xavier...come on, at least try.

The good fanyboy stuff. Nightcrawler. Spot on, great character. The Weapon X entire segment.

Thoughts the film as a whole. It was alright, not great, not as good as Civil War, better than Bats vs Supes. Not as good as Days of Future Past. I didn't have any issues with pacing as there was a lot to do. The plot has jumped to the 80s, so 80s hair and everything (which was great) but the characters havent aged a day. There was some good comedy in it, nice comedy, not obvious like Avengers, a cool reference to how bad X-men 3 was too. I think it did get a bit cluster f***y near the end as they tried to end things in my view.

I'm not entire surely where they are going with the franchise now, in honestly. It's time to stop, soon Jackman won't be Wolverine anymore and people won't be interested in another mediocre film. I think it's time for Fox to give in to Disney and let them have the characters again. Make Marvel, Marvel, not some weird spinoff where the Maximoff twins are 'enhanced' and no one likes the inhumans. :P

Final note, I don't care how popular Jen Lawrence is, Mystique is a horrible person in the comics, she should be nowhere near teaching kids at a school or the 'moral' person.

Hmm, pie.

X-Men should have a deeper story than avengers, that's what it's good at, Avengers covers up with action & comedy

That's because it's meant to be about the fear others have for something that's different. This film ignores that mostly and just plays on it being a superhero film with mutants. X-men 3 did a better job of playing on that then this did and that film was awful.

Hmm, pie.

All my knowledge of the x-men are from the cartoons and Apocalypse is always the biggest baddy the x-men has to beat. Comic book fans where do you think fox will go after this.

Without spoiling anything I thought it was fine not as good a DOFP it really lacked in the mutant vs human story at I always enjoyed. The story was just kind of simple with magneto having the best arc imo.

Apocalypse in the comics is very human centric. He loves humanity but thinks they would be better off if they took their next step in evolution, that being mutants, but he tries to force it. The comics version is always lacking though compared to the 90s cartoon. The 90s cartoon he was a badass in all sense of the term, unstoppable and undefeatable. He wants mutants to rule at the expense of humanity.

This version was just someone who wanted to rule.

Fox will make Deadpool 2 but for X-men, no idea.

So is there an even bigger bad then the first mutant.

Avengers is enjoyable if you're looking for shallow or deep.  You just have to look harder.  Civil War explores deeper themes and Ultron was more complex than many more respected films.

I am Iron Man

phoenix beat apocalypse

Fox has no incentive to ever give back the X-men franchise to Disney. That would be throwing money out the window. The X-men comics have enough characters and story arcs to fill a hundred movies.
