Maybe for you, but I just don't see it. As far as I see it the PlayStation brand is just much bigger than Nintendo in most of the world.

And this 'their 1st party games are practically non existent and don't do that well compared to Nintendo' where exactly does this come from? Zelda? Nope, they definitely have games that can outsell Zelda. Metroid? Same. Fire Emblem? Same. Pikmin? Same. Animal Crossing? Same. Mario? Well Galaxy is regarded as one of the best entries in the Mario franchise and released on Nintendo's best selling home console... yet 'practically non existent' games like Halo 3 & TLOU outsold it. Curious that...

If people aren't willing to buy Nintendo consoles for their games now why would that suddenly change? Because of 3rd party games? But they already have them on PS/Xbox/PC. For Nintendo games? Well if that were the case then they'd already be buying Nintendo consoles.

Let's just count one generation so as best to compare:

1 The Last of Us PS3 2013 Action Sony Computer Entertainment Europe 2.40 2.25 0.28 1.01 5.95

Umm you're missing something...

I don't know about MS, but i can say this for sony.

All sony studios kinda do their own thing. Dare i say they are very genre/niche specific. It makes zero sense having the best racing game franchise (GT) yet also having another studio that makes a game that would compete directly with the other studio. Everything in driveclub could have neatly fit into the "arcade mode" of GT.

I will have to give Microsoft a pass on this scenario.

PlayStation is getting a ton of RPGs this year and XBox needed something to compete in this genre.

Instead of providing XBox with a definitive RPG, LionHead created an abomination of online multiplayer arena.

Honestly, I don't know if the game was going to be good or bad at the end, but its clearly NOT what Microsoft asked for.

In the other hand, Evolution Studios gave Sony everything they asked and more. Yes, the game was not ready at launch, but Evolution was a relatively small Studio, that could have used this rough experience to build something even better in the future.

To wrap-up, Sony lost more than Microsoft did in this situation.

Errrrrr...... who do you think greenlit the project?

And how exactly did sony lose? At least the game evolution made was released and has so far gathered sales of probbaly over 2.3M. Where is Fable?

Sony closed down Evolution because their games overlapped a lot with another huge studio they have.
It just wouldn't make sense to have another realistic racer like that.

I find the difference barely anything. And I'm a Nintendo fanman that owns a Wii U.

Driveclub from evolution studios sold 2mio units retail so far, adding digitally sales we are probl around 2,5-3 mio units. Its the most beatifull racing game so far and its also more then microsoft is selling with the forza series on their xbox one.

U comparing DC to Forza. So do not forget about Sony's Polyphony Digital and GT Sport, main rival to Forza Motorsport series. Maybe Evolution's problem was too slow development, a lot of delays to DC and anyway very limited game at release with low scores from critics and gamers. Yeah, through years it has become a good and quality exclusive game. Maybe Sony considered it was a too long and bad experience. So no more.

Anyway MS now have Minecraft license and Fable for future ideas. Sony have partnership with Kojima. Not bad for both.

I have trouble understanding it aswell.

Even if i understand they don't want any studios doing development hell and want them to be efficient. They should find a way of fixing that rather than just close them down. Heck, they can downsize and make them do bite sized projects if scale is an issue.
They can hire someone else to oversee the projects, etc.

It just seems like a waste to me.

They obviously didn't make money and they're corporations not benefactors.

For Sony I would think it pretty obvious since the game launched to horrible press and had monstrous internet hate.  I'm not a racing genre fan so I don't know if the intense hatred was justified or not but it doesn't matter because the game had no chance of recovery or turning the hatred around no matter what they did.

For MS the game obviously wasn't good and they cut their losses.  They also wiped 6 (I believe it was 6)other studios at the same time of the Lionhead announcement from their studios listing.  I think some were Kinect studios so obviously it's just another sign Kinect focus has shifted and one made project spark and that must not have caught on either. They said the studios closed were shifted into other studios.

I find it more unusual people think companies aren't worried about profits just because it's a game studio.

No I'm not. I said let's just compare one generation as that's the only way to compare sales. If you'd like me to count multi generational, I'd be happy to be able to count Twilight Princess on GC, Wii, as well as TPHD on Wii U all as one number.

Let's just count one generation so as best to compare:

1 The Last of Us PS3 2013 Action Sony Computer Entertainment Europe 2.40 2.25 0.28 1.01 5.95
1 Halo 3 X360 2007 Shooter Microsoft Game Studios 7.96 2.83 0.13 1.21 12.13
1 Super Mario Galaxy Wii 2007 Platform Nintendo 6.16 3.39 1.20 0.75 11.50
2 Super Mario Galaxy 2 Wii 2010 Platform Nintendo 3.65 2.40 0.98 0.64 7.66

Halo 3 and SMG1 were basically a tie (never know with VGC numbers what the margin of error is) and both SMG outlod TTOU by a LONG shot. And you brought up two of the best selling games that generation on the hd twins and compared it to two games that sold a lot, but no where near what the biggest sellers were:

1 Wii Sports Wii 2006 Sports Nintendo 41.48 29.00 3.77 8.46 82.72
2 Mario Kart Wii Wii 2008 Racing Nintendo 15.84 12.85 3.79 3.30 35.78
3 Wii Sports Resort Wii 2009 Sports Nintendo 15.74 10.98 3.28 2.96 32.96
4 Wii Play Wii 2006 Misc Nintendo 14.03 9.19 2.93 2.85 29.00
5 New Super Mario Bros. Wii Wii 2009 Platform Nintendo 14.59 7.04 4.70 2.26 28.58
6 Wii Fit Wii 2007 Sports Nintendo 8.94 8.03 3.60 2.15 22.71
7 Wii Fit Plus Wii 2009 Sports Nintendo 9.09 8.57 2.53 1.79 21.98
8 Super Smash Bros. Brawl Wii 2008 Fighting Nintendo 6.74 2.59 2.66 1.01 13.00

These are all games that sold better than Galaxy 1 and 2. Every single one, by the way, is an actual Nintendo IP that is owned by them (total of 266.73 million sold). Now let's look at the top chunk for ps3 and 360.

PS3 numbers: Total of 103.39 million. That is 163.34 mill LESS units sold in software in the top 8. Now, let's see how many of those are actually owned by Sony. 1 for a total of 10.75 million sold. Nintendo 1st party absolutely destroyed Sony first party.

1 Grand Theft Auto V PS3 2013 Action Take-Two Interactive 6.95 9.17 0.96 4.22 21.30
2 Call of Duty: Black Ops II PS3 2012 Shooter Activision 4.98 5.86 0.64 2.52 14.01
3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 PS3 2011 Shooter Activision 5.53 5.79 0.49 1.62 13.43
4 Call of Duty: Black Ops PS3 2010 Shooter Activision 5.97 4.43 0.48 1.83 12.71
5 Gran Turismo 5 PS3 2010 Racing Sony Computer Entertainment 2.96 4.86 0.81 2.13 10.75
6 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 PS3 2009 Shooter Activision 4.98 3.67 0.38 1.63 10.66
7 Grand Theft Auto IV PS3 2008 Action Take-Two Interactive 4.75 3.74 0.44 1.61 10.54
8 Call of Duty: Ghosts PS3 2013 Shooter Activision 4.08 3.72 0.38 1.81 9.99

360: 117.58 million sold total. 2 games owned by Microsoft for a total of 33.92 million units sold. Nintendo destroyed Microsoft first party.

1 Kinect Adventures! X360 2010 Misc Microsoft Game Studios 14.96 4.92 0.24 1.67 21.79
2 Grand Theft Auto V X360 2013 Action Take-Two Interactive 9.52 5.25 0.06 1.35 16.18
3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 X360 2011 Shooter Activision 9.01 4.26 0.13 1.32 14.72
4 Call of Duty: Black Ops X360 2010 Shooter Activision 9.63 3.70 0.11 1.12 14.56
5 Call of Duty: Black Ops II X360 2012 Shooter Activision 8.24 4.28 0.07 1.12 13.70
6 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 X360 2009 Shooter Activision 8.51 3.61 0.08 1.29 13.49
7 Halo 3 X360 2007 Shooter Microsoft Game Studios 7.96 2.83 0.13 1.21 12.13
8 Grand Theft Auto IV X360 2008 Action Take-Two Interactive 6.75 3.09 0.14 1.02 11.01

In conclusion, you brought that generation up and Nintendo 1st party software on the Wii alone in the top 8 positions Nintendo outsold drastically in general, but ESPECIALLY amongst 1st party titles.

So you're going to bring the Wii games in to this? Which completely flopped this gen and are practically 'non-existent' now...

Besides, compare any other gen and Nintendo certainly isn't always that strong. PS hasn't yet got an exclusive that has outsold the best selling Wii U exclusive, but with how successful Uncharted 4 looks to be it may well have soon.

So what of gen 6?

3. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec 2001 Racing Sony Computer Entertainment 6.85 5.09 1.87 1.16 14.98
1. Super Smash Bros. Melee 2001 Fighting Nintendo 4.41 1.04 1.39 0.22 7.07
1. Halo 2 2004 Shooter Microsoft Game Studios 6.82 1.53 0.05 0.08 8.49

Sony had the highest selling 1st party game that generation, by quite a large margin as well. Not only that but Microsoft's best selling 1st party game also outsold Nintendo's best, on a console with a comparable install base no less.

Gen 5?

1. Super Mario 64 1996 Platform Nintendo 6.91 2.85 1.91 0.23 11.89
1. Gran Turismo 1997 Racing Sony Computer Entertainment 4.02 3.87 2.54 0.52 10.95

Super Mario 64 sold more than Gran Turismo, yes. But it's not exactly a large difference.

Besides, you haven't addressed the most important point. If people don't want Nintendo 1st party games now (if they did they would have bought a Wii U) why is having 3rd party games alone suddenly going to make Nintendo's 1st party more appealing?

As far as I see it it's simply not possible for Nintendo to 'wipe the floor globally' unless Sony screws up because the PlayStation brand is just that strong. Even when Sony did screw up (PS3) and Nintendo had their most successful home console to date the gap is still less than 20m. Yes, they could win a generation, but it's going to take a more than just getting 3rd party support to do that.

1) You brought up the 360/ps3 generation by saying Halo 3 and TLOU. That is not my fault. If you wannt compare gen 6 or 5 or whatever gen, I'd be happy to, but you brought up that gen.

2) What on Earth makes you think people don't want 1st party Nintendo games now? Notice the 1st party game sales. Yes they are less than Wii but that is because a TON less Wii U's have sold and will sell compared to Wii. In fact, there were 7.8 x more Wii's sold than Wii U's (as of today) So you'd think that would mean that 1st party game sales would be 7.8x less using your logic right? Wii U top 8 sales are 35.02 million units sold makes it 7.6 x less. Which means that proportionally, the amount of people buying 1st party games per console has increased, slightly, by .2 times, hardly a decrease let alone fulfilling your opinion of "people don't want Nintendo 1st party games now (if they did they would have bought a Wii U)."

3) And you proved a massive point by showing how Nintendo still has the best selling exclusive this gen despite having a massive amount less hardware sold.

4) Playstation as hardware is incredibly strong, because 3rd parties made it. Their 1st software itself isn't that strong. And if the Wii had HD tech like the ps3, the gap would have been an insane amount larger than 20 mil. People wanted Wii's, but they also wanted high definition games (which the Wii couldn't provide) so a lot of people ended up with two devices. If people could have played hd multiplatform games from 3rd parties on the Wii a ton of them wouldn't have bought a ps3 I'm sure.
