A traditional console would flop hard because it is 2016 and not 2013.  Their rivals have had more time to build a user base, an online community, third party support, and game libraries.  Nintendo could have possibly had success if they released a traditional console in 2012 or 13.  They cannot do that now.

So Nintendo's only choice is to go the Wii and DS route...if it works again. Make "must play" technology. I understand that PS and XB basically have a install base that would be very hard to sway. I kinda get what you are saying but it doesn't make sense to at least output technology that all developers can utilize. You can't do anythign without third party support which builds your install base. Wii U is a Nintendo fan's console. It isn't for all types of gamers from all walks of life.

Yup, they pretty much have to go the Wii or DS route.  Obviously having power on par with their competitors will make them far likely to succeed, but the gimmick is an absolute must.

Hahaha. That's almost word for word what Kimishima said.

Yeah, I've decided some time ago to just stop listening to what Nintendo has to say and just wait to learn what the NX is. "New Way of Playing Games" sounds like PR to me.

My understanding is that the system(s) will not just be the Wii 3 or 4DS; rather, they will be in a new line of consoles, a la the change from gamecube to wii, rather than from wii to wii u. That's the way I interpret his statements.

That's an optimistic interpretation of it. I'd hope as much myself. Then again we're talking Nintendo here. I just hope it isn't an artificial idea gone wrong.

I don't think they don't need a gimmick, I'm just saying it should be a gimmick that isn't obvious or plays off of already existing tech. I mean...we had tablets for a good half a decade before Wii U arrived. I really don't see what it added to the expereince. There are games that work well with it, Mario Maker and Splatoon come to mind but it wasn't a necessity like Nintendo had originally intended it to be. Reggie even said that it would support 2 gamepads and we have yet to recieve a game that promotes this or an update that even supports it. They need that special sauce but it has to be Mac sauce, not water. It has to have substance and taste.

All of Nintendo's platforms and ideas used existing tech, motion controls and analogues were around since the 80s they just utilized them differently later on. If you want to see what the gamepad added play games like Deus Ex for reference, it's not there to be radical it's there to make the experience more streamline and convenient, it was never meant to be a mandatory feature only a complimentary one that way it allowed for traditional means of play, the problem with the Wii U was down to how it was handled why trying to cater to two different groups. The complaint with the Wii was the feature was mandatory then with the Wii U it's the gamepad is not used as often, this highlights why Nintendo are better off not listening to the loud mob on the forums and just do their own thing.

Please no gamepad, 2 screens for handheld works perfectly but not when you play on a TV.

Or at least make it an optional add-on to play Wii U games BC, ship the console with a normal controller please PLEASE.

i think having a controller screen is fine but it needs ro be much smaller & sleeker. A 6.2 inch screen is overkill but a 4 inch screen? That would be fine.

Oh my god. Ok nevermind, I take back everything I said before. NX could easily just be a traditional console now.

People saying Nintendo need to stop being different (just make it more power and "tradtional") needs to understand that Nintendo is not in a position to directly compete with larger companies. They will be outmatch by deep pockets and with high chances of leading to financial ruins.

Anyways, this is exciting. This new way of playing better be outside of the box. I'll be disappointed if it's just a console-handheld hybrid (well, it depends on execution but still far from a good surprise).

We can play Zelda U on it.
Só i think the tradicional way to play would be still there

Yeah I'm somewhat nervous too lol.
