I don't think they don't need a gimmick, I'm just saying it should be a gimmick that isn't obvious or plays off of already existing tech. I mean...we had tablets for a good half a decade before Wii U arrived. I really don't see what it added to the expereince. There are games that work well with it, Mario Maker and Splatoon come to mind but it wasn't a necessity like Nintendo had originally intended it to be. Reggie even said that it would support 2 gamepads and we have yet to recieve a game that promotes this or an update that even supports it. They need that special sauce but it has to be Mac sauce, not water. It has to have substance and taste.

All of Nintendo's platforms and ideas used existing tech, motion controls and analogues were around since the 80s they just utilized them differently later on. If you want to see what the gamepad added play games like Deus Ex for reference, it's not there to be radical it's there to make the experience more streamline and convenient, it was never meant to be a mandatory feature only a complimentary one that way it allowed for traditional means of play, the problem with the Wii U was down to how it was handled why trying to cater to two different groups. The complaint with the Wii was the feature was mandatory then with the Wii U it's the gamepad is not used as often, this highlights why Nintendo are better off not listening to the loud mob on the forums and just do their own thing.
