Forums - Sony Discussion - Uncharted 4 - Aldro's Review

Game is amazing, got it today, couldn't stop playing. The visuals are probably the best I have seen to date and the story is great, lots of action. Uncharted 3 kinda left me disappointed for some reason because Uncharted 2 was so great but 4 is certainly on par with 2 till now and that's a very hard thing to do.

Anytime someone reviews any game they review it from their own perspective. That perspective is going to include their experiences with other games.

You litterally couldn't review a game in a vacum if you've ever played another game.

Someone reviewing Uncharted 4 could have only ever played Tetris before, and they would be subconsciously comparing it to Tetris.

It's not possible.

Thats why I asked him what this game does right when it comes to gameplay that many other games dont. If I asked someone to give me an example of a game with excellent gameplay and they answered Uncharted 4, then I would ask them whats so great about it as well.

I don't understand your reasoning though. I assume the point your getting at is Uncharted 4 should be scored lower because you don't find Uncharted 4 to be particularly special or innovative in the gameplay department. But that isn't really the focus of the game.

Lets take two games.

One, is a game that has an amazing story, but only average gameplay.

The other, is a game with amazing gameplay, but only an average story.

Some could say that either of those games is a 10, or is their favorite game of all time and they would both be totally valid. Because even though one aspect of the game isn't worldbeating, it's still good enough as to not get in the way of the real draw of the game.

Nobody knocks points off of OOT from having an average story, why would they knock points off of UN4 for just having average gameplay?

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Well I guess I just cant accept average gameplay. If Im gonna give a game a 10, then it better be a joy to play. I guess graphics, story, music etc means more to some people. I will ALWAYS put gameplay over anything else.

This is another place where this kind of conversation often falls apart. A game that focuses on things other than moment to moment gameplay can still be a joy to play. Saying otherwise is like saying that watching big summer action movies is better than watching dramas because action movies are more fun. Both experiences are a joy to the person consuming that entertainment, they just reach that goal using different methods. One way isn't inherently better than another. They're just different experiences.

No, I watch movies and play video games for different reasons. I need great gameplay to keep playing a game. I need an interesting story/premise to keep watching a movie.

Let me explain why that line of thinking doesn't make any sense. Lets jump back to our movie example.

No, I watch movies and read books for different reasons. I need a great spectacle to keep watching a movie. I need an interesting story/premise to keep reading a book.

That kind of thinking is reductive. Taking a form of media in only it's most basic sense. Movies tell stories in a different way that do books. A game tells a story in a different way than a movie does.

If you only judge games by what they were 30 years ago, they won't ever grow.

Also, keep in mind that this doesn't just extend to Uncharted 4, or even stories. This is about any game that strays from the traditional idea of what a game is.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. I went in with really high expectations and this game still blew them away and it's pretty easily the best game I've played since The Last of Us.

I just don't get how people are blown away by this game after playing the previous three. Its like people have never played a game before when a new Uncharted comes out. I just find that interesting. Are you really surprised every time the ground beneath Nathan Drake crumbles and he hangs over a pit and laughs it off? I just thinks it get ridiculous after a while. The guy can barely brush his teeth without the ground breaking and he plummeting to the basement.

I dont know. Maybe Ive just become a cynical "old" man...

With that mentality, why should anybody find enjoyment on mario stumping another goomba or foiling bowser's plans yet again and saving the princess? Or Link for that matter?

The Uncharted games thrive for their cinematic approach to gaming and their great storytelling. After Uncharted 2, ND didn't set out to reinvent the wheel and that's fine. They set out to tell a story and many of the previous themes and aspects carry over (such as bombastic set pieces) but the story is what holds it together and elevates it.

You act as is great story telling and great gameplay cannot co-exist. A good game can be just game play focused (Mario) or just a good story (The Walking dead) or it can be a good balance of both (Uncharted). Also, everything Normachacho said, he explained it way better than I ever could.

EDIT: The gameplay of Uncharted 4 is pretty good. It's grounded (to a point, it can easily break suspension of disbelief during gameplay, not just cutscenes) but it feels great. Movements are fluid, there's tons of vertically in the way during combat and different ways to approach a fight. The new rope mechanic, for example, is fantastic. You really think people would praise Uncharted 4 so much if the gameplay was a complete mess or painfully average? It's rock solid.

"Trick shot? The trick is NOT to get shot." - Lucian

You sum up m'y thoughts.

I loved Rafe, especially his last chara design and this boss battle sooooo good ! Not like thé others Uncharted.

I loved thé music too, the sound in général is excellent and make everything so much more intense, just perfect at any moment , i have a lot of gunfight musics in m'y head right now, and also thé opening/ending mysic of course, perfect remix, i love it, it really feels like youre hearing the last ending of Uncharted.

THé gunfights were delicious to play too, so many epic ones, thé trilogy feels so bad and old when you compare them, here i can say à lot of thèse gunfights are among thé best ive ever played in à TPS, long time since i didnt have that feeling, since MP3/RDR

And that épilogue. Just perfect, so much émotions , even more if youre à fan.

Oh something i wanted to say because i read à lot about the fact some chaptzrs could have been cut and would be useless, so let me explain why people who think that are wrong : SPOILERS

So first thé first chapter, of course this one was necessary to start building thé brother relationship, without this chapter all the séquences with sam would have less impact on thé player because thé player needs to feel this character grew up with sam, and words are not enough for that, you need to play with him to be connectéd to him so hé can be more than just à random ally.

Then an other chapter , even more important, thé chapter 4 BIG SPOILER OF THE END " escape with Hector " , after knowing everything was just made up by Sam, à lot of players thought " then this chapter was totally useless and just à way for ND to artificiely increase thé length " , yes, thats what you think first but if you really think about it, youll understand this chapter was one of thé most important to build thé story :
Nathan is not thé only one who must be connectéd to his brother like i said, but also, hé is not thé only one who must believe his lies, it's à very important part of thé immersion to make thé player believe thé lié as much as Nathan. And what better way to do it than making US play thé fictionnal story invented by Sam ? With just à discussion and no gameplay, à lot of us would have doubted of his story.

I think if you are honest, no one guessed sam lied. Why ? Because we all took for reality something we played. So we wanted to save sam as much as Nathan and then we felt disappointed too to hear the truth.

When i understood all of that, i was really amazed by their genius and their clever way to break thé 4th wall.

And to think this game is only à Uncharted, i cant wait for TLOU 2 !

Honestly, I hated the Rafe battle. ND did a good job with Lazarevic in U2, translating the mechanics we've been practicing and honing throughout the game and then putting a new spin on them. U4, meanwhile, introduces an entirely new set of mechanics at the end for fencing that just fell really flat imo. I would argue the quickest way to flub a final boss (outside of making it a QTE fest) is to have it feel nothing like the game you've been playing up to that point, and Rafe is certainly that.

I enjoyed the game immensely, but the biggest problem I had with it is that it definitely felt like Naughty Dog wanted to make The Last of Us 2, but were confined by it being Uncharted. As such, the game felt like it had a bit of an identity crisis. There were so many times throughout the game that I thought "wow, this level design is going to be amazing in The Last of Us 2."

Having played through the game, even though it was the longest length-wise, I was left wanting more. This is because the shootouts were genuinely lots fun (a first for the series, to be honest) and they were much more spaced out than in previous Uncharteds. Whereas in each previous Uncharted, I felt like the games overstayed their welcome in the third act with their tedious battles and bullet sponge enemies, this was not at all present in Uncharted 4. That said, TLOU was the perfect length and it never overstayed its welcome.

Honestly, even though I know people will criticize it. I genuinely enjoyed the Rafe battle. I only wish they made parry left and parry right L1 and R1 respectively instead of triangle and circle. I accidentally pressed square instead of triangle so many times.

So, in total, U4 was a very, very, very good game, but it was nowhere close to as good as The Last of Us.
