That is Nintendo's job to convince people through marketing that they need a controller to play all of their fantastic game offerings on the devices they already own.

Imagine a controller the same size as the first NES one, but with a battery and more button options. It would easily slide into your pocket and be ready to game on the go at a moment's notice.

I would buy one and always have it with me.

You would be alone.

if Nintendo was going to start developing full scale mobile games, they could just as easily work with existing Apple and Android device instead of making their own. also, small scale games like Skylanders and Mario would work, but larger titles like Xenoblade and Bayonetta would be way too big to fit on a tablet. Most tablets have adopted a standard storage capacity of 16 - 32 GB or even 64 GB if you have the extra money. Meanwhile console games are getting so big that 1 TB is starting to seem small. (yes I know the Wii U only has 32GB of storage, that isnt acceptable either)

I can see Nintendo moving to ARM. Nvidia's shield console at $199 uses about 10W and beats the Wii-U in power. And indeed it will make games easily portable to mobile.

Who knows maybe Nintendo has already struck a deal with Nvidia and Nintendo will use their X1 chip(hence the codename).

I think that would be a smart move for Nintendo. But they would have to also heavily incorporate people's mobile devices into the NX family of systems. If any one gaming company is suffering the most from people's move to mobile gaming, it's Nintendo, because they have the biggest base of casual gamers.

A mobile technology based home console with a controller that also doubles as your phone's controller.

If it has the Nintendo logo on it, I will be one of millions owning it.

This is false. I don't agree that Nintendo would put games on mobile either, but that is false. There are ways to decrease size. Nintendo squeezed Xenoblade Chronicles to fit under 3GB.

The problem with this is Nintendo wouldn't have any control over software licensing fees. For example if say Capcom wanted to make a game using this controller, I don't think Nintendo could make any way that they collect a licensing fee like they would on a platform they own. Apple/Google own these OS' so that would be out.

If NX fails though I could see Nintendo doing this and just throwing their entire weight behind mobile. In 3-4 years by the time something like that would become clear, the standard smartphone/tablet processor will be pretty beefy too.

Worked well for the Wii U. Sell a flawed product nobody wants, but slap the Nintendo name on it. You'll be one of hundreds. Maybe thousands.

If the game is made for the NX home console, there is your licensing fee. The fact that the game also is playable on your mobile device doesn't make that fee disappear. And the Nintendo controller would be required to play the game on a mobile device.

Maybe you would have to buy the NX micro console to get the controller that you would use on your phone. Otherwise the game would be unplayable.

Most devs wouldn't bother with the console I don't think. Why pay a licensing fee when you don't have to. Any company could make a controller too, third parties could basically just copy the Nintendo design and have their own, so that would likely be a problem too, it's an easy idea to copy if it has any success.

And that is exactly what Nintendo said. And that is why they don't want to show it yet. The controller will be patented for years, but will need revisions to keep those patents in force.
