Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Emily Rogers: NX not gonna use X86 architecture, raw power close to XBO

On April 4th, 2016, there was a Reddit rumor claiming that NX was using x86 architecture. Reddit’s moderators verified the post, and this gave the rumor some legitimacy.

After speaking to seven different people this week, I can say with confidence that this is false. NX is not using x86 architecture like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The NX has special, custom-made chips and the overall design of the hardware is very modern. The chips are industry leading because they are very modern chips, but having modern chips doesn’t necessarily mean Nintendo is aiming to create the most powerful hardware on the market. Furthermore, any rumors on “Polaris chips” and “Polaris architecture” regarding NX is wacky. There’s a good reason why those rumors are wacky.

In terms of raw power, numerous sources tell me that NX is much closer to Xbox One than PlayStation 4. Even that might be stretching it a tiny bit. Anyone who is claiming that NX is “two times the power of PS4 GPU” is being misled by their sources. Based on what I’ve heard, I don’t believe the NX will compete directly with PS4 (Neo) / PS4K in raw power.

There will be plenty of debates over the NX’s specs because it’s not simple to directly compare two apples (with x86 architecture) to an orange (that doesn’t use x86 architecture). But everything that I’ve heard (so far) indicates that NX isn’t the PS4K competitor that some Nintendo fans are hoping for.

Good for Nintendo. Launching a console at 400$ to compete with PS4K/Neo just wouldn't have been a good move at all.

I can already see some people here crucifying Nintendo LOL ...

Hmmmmmmm well, it is a rumor after all, so he may be lying or his sources may just be mistaken, but I really hope that it is equal to PS4 power for several reasons. And if the NX is close to Xone in power, the raw power jump from Wii U to NX will be very little, which makes me question if this rumor has some legitimicy at all.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Then why not just keep with the wii u, pointless relasing a new console.

I don't like what I'm reading so I'm going to choose to ignore this and either wait for a rumor that I like or wait until Nintendo unveils the NX.

I always thought that Nintendo only needs to be in the same ballpark as the two others. So third parties could easily port their games on it. And I thought it was enough, but it was before the ps4k and xbox one.5

I also always thought Nintendo would never have the most powerful console. It will NEVER happen.

But anyway, hard to know if Nintendo made the right move, but to me the most important things are:
-strong first party support
-good third party support
-at least a xbox one equivalent in term a power
-a low price point

Hope you have a hell of a gimmick Nintendo.

Polaris 11 was not some fantasy tech anyway, it's a laptop chip, and a cheap one at that, Nintendo not using it is just stupid.

They have very poor odds of third party support now I'd say. No x86 and a weaker chip than the PS4 ... third parties are not going to even bother. At least the Western ones.

In no fucking way is XBox One performance modern unless this a portable device either.

Is Emily Rogers confirmed to really be a girl? I've never heard about a woman that is interested in computer hardware.
