Forums - PC Discussion - Windows 7 is running slow on my friend's PC. Any good alternative?

Windows 10 should make it run heaps faster. Upgraded a cheap 2gb ram acer pc from 7 to 10. It went from constant freezing and really slow processing to working like a dream. W10 is much less resource intensive than 7.

Yeah, this happened to me as well. On paper windows 10 requires more ram but works faster than 7 in my experience

For Gaming Win10 is a far better option for PCs. So if he wants to game with the up coming PC games, he will be missing out because of 1 key factor.. DirectX12. Games run better on Win10 so theres really only one option.

With shitty hardware like that, I doubt he could run any DX12 games ...

Ubuntu is a good option. It is probably the easiest system to use that is not OS X or Windows and has a nice support.

Linux or just upgrade the hardware and go with Linux or stick with 7.

A slimmed down version of Linux is one option, Ubuntu etc as recommended by others will run just as slow if not slower than 7 on that machine, you will need to find a minimal install either that or look at some minor hardware upgrades. Win 10 tends to be leaner than 7, but older hardware can be problematic.

Regardless,  games are only going to be more DX12 focus in the future. Why cancel out on an entire APi. Might as well grab Win10 for it.

I wouldn't say all games in the future are only going to focus on DX 12 and only work on WIndows 10.

Does the OP's friend even use his PC for gaming ? Why even upgrade for the purpose of DX12 when his hardware is shit ?

A tip for you, a crappy PC with Windows 10 will still be a pile of crap ...

Upgrading to Windows 10 for the purpose of DX12 is an utter waste of time when he'll have to do it again if he decides to buy a new system or motherobard ...

I didn't see that one listed before, but I'll check it out, thanks. My friend's computer will also only be used for web browsing.
I'm just surprised that it ran Windows XP great with 500 MB ram, but lags even when just browsing folders on Windows 7 with 1,5 gig. Something with similar system requirements to XP would probably work fine.

Open Task Manager - Performance tab - and check the physical memory to see how much RAM is recognized by the system.  RAM is really tricky.

Why not just reinstall Win7? You said it got worse over time which indicates there is a lot of clutter on it.
