Forums - Gaming Discussion - Which generation do the NX/PS4Neo belong to?

PS4K.8.5th gen (like the Sega CD/32X is a 4.5th gen).
The NX is a 9th gen console.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Gens only matter for each product. PS4 is the 4th gen of PlayStation, Xbox One is the 3rd gen of XBox ect

We like to group things together for the sake of comparison. In that case, I don't see why NX, PS4 Neo, & XB1.5 wouldn't count as a new gen. They will be the consoles competing with each other

Grouping consoles from different manufacturers together when they don't follow similar release schedules is difficult. IMO consoles should belong to the generation they are competing with for the majority of their lifespan, otherwise you get into a state where Nintendo may release there 10th gen console just after sony/Ms release their 9th gen console and it makes no sense at all.

If for the majority of the NX's lifespan it is competing against the ps4/XBO it should be classified as belonging to that generation, so an 8th gen system. Neo is a revision of the ps4 in no way should it be classified as gen 8.5, if the trend of incremental hardware updates continues generations may be completely abolished anyway.

the follow up but not quite next gen. or the improved current gen.

NX is a hybrid really. Almost like the Dreamcast in that it existed in both the 5th and 6th generation era(although shortly in both).

Agreed no we will see if Nintendo does what Sega didn't. Which is making a mid gen console successful. Anyways by all technical means Neo is 8th gen and NX 9th.

Mid-generation is a tough one especially as the PS4 and Xbox One pick up big steam this year..

If the NEO is more powerful than the NX, does that make the NEO 9th generation too? Doesn't really matter anyway. VGChartz will probably just blend NEO sales in with the standard PS4, take out the Wii U and replace it with the NX starting from scratch?

It doesn't make sense to put the NX in the ninth generation if it will be competing with the ps4/XBO for the majority of its life, time will tell if it will be remembered as part of this generation or the next.

Both 8th gen. NX isn't here to compete against the PS5 and Xnext, but against the PS4 and X1. Generations are defined by their timeframes. In a similar way, both the Atari 2600 and 5200 are considered 2nd gen consoles.

This isn't an early next gen console. Nintendo basically cancelled the Wii U after launch and now they are releasing a new and reasonably late 8th gen device.

I would probably say ps neo is still 8th gen but what if theres is no ps5 after the neo and its just another upgraded console, will the term next gen die off? And if that happens what about the inevitable time when a game works on the future console, the neo but not the base ps4, will the neo have to be classed as a separate entity to the ps4?
