I'm stealing this from some comment, but:
He was obviously a terrorist from the brutal group: Al-gebra.

Showing concern for herself and the lives of those around her. What a bitch.

This is great. It really show how some Americans are easily afraid of things they don't understand. Other ethnicity and common algebra!

Common algebra?

This is one of the papers Menzio has worked on in the past and I wouldn't classify the math used there as common: http://web-facstaff.sas.upenn.edu/~gmenzio/linkies/QSs.pdf

Seriously, he'd have every right to not answer questions or identify himself (depending on what state he was in) but that probably would have gotten him on a terrorism watch list, and he needs to be able to fly.

The bottom line is that terrorism sucks, Americans hate dealing with the minority of the religious group that commits most of these acts, but we want better detection and to avoid fingerings the wrong person.

Yeah...but it was math...You don't get to just flip out over anything for the sake of "safety".

I'd be worried too if I'd suddenly see an economist using actual math.

Zing!

Seriously, though. The woman's reaction was terrible, but what's worse is that the man was actually interrogated because of the claim that he was writing in another language... because that's a crime now, apparently.

Better safe than sorry: I'd rather this woman embarrass herself because she didn't understand differential symbols than a hijacking taking place.

So, what you're saying is that anytime anyone is worried over anything, no matter how silly, they need to make a big thing out of it? What? Do you suggest that we just keep anyone who speaks a different language, or who's skin is too dark from flying? What about entering stores? I mean, Jesus, we wouldn't want someone bombing a grocery store, and it's better to be safe then sorry.

It isn't about that woman embarrassing herself, it's about interogating people who are just going about their business because some people are morons.
