Holy fudge...
1080 = 9 TF for 699$.
1070 = 6.5 TF 449$.
These cards designed with VR in mind.

AMD is pretty much finished as far as graphics go ...
They were always the first to transition to smaller transistor feature sizes but they don't even have that advantage anymore ...
The only way I could see them gaining relevance again is if Microsoft plays dirty and decides to totally sabatoge Nvidia under DX12 ...

if a normal 980 can do about 49 fps, then yes. This 1080 card should be over 60fps avg.
However so is a R9 Fury X / R9 Nano already.

Too early to count them out.
They have 14/16nm and FinFET too for their next cards, which probably wont be far behinde Nvidia's.
Also they are claiming 2.5x perf/watt gains.
Its too early to tell yet, they ll have a big jump as well.
The reason is because we where stuck on 28nm for so damn long.
Most of this is just because of better processing nodes.
AMD will have a big jump too.

Are you refering to the bad drivers Nvidia has? that keep crashing in quantum break?
Or am I missing something here?

Yeaa that cause Nvidia gpus "can't run" quantum break due to bad drivers. Its not an insult or anything, just making fun since it rarely happens to Nvidia :P

AMD needs to get Polaris 10 (232mm^2 ?) to match the GM200. Not Hawaii, not Fiji but GM200 otherwise they will be totally outclassed when it comes to perf/mm^2 ...
Their current situation is bad enough as it is and DX12 doesn't look promising enough to change the tides ...
