Nintendo's 2016 lineup is one of their worst ever. I'm a HUGE Nintendo fan and I'm literally only interested in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Pokemon, Bravely Second, and Twilight Princess HD.

We also know next to nothing about Nintendo's 2017 plans except for Zelda NX.

So not only do we have a sparse lineup this year, but we also have to deal with an incredible amount of uncertainty. The NX could stun us with a fantastic lineup...or it could be even worse than the Wii U. The problem with today's Nintendo is we really don't know how the NX is going to turn out.

This is a really bad time to be a Nintendo fan. It's one of the worst years to be a Nintendo fan, that's for sure. 1995 is another really shitty time to be a Nintendo fan because the Nintendo 64 + Pokemon wasn't out yet and Nintendo devoted pretty much all of their first-party efforts (outside of a few star titles like Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island) towards the failed Virtual Boy. I hated that thing so much. This is pretty much on-par with the 1995 era.

1994-95 was awesome ...

Donkey Kong Country 1&2, Killer Instinct, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Super Punch-Out, Super Mario RPG, Ken Griffey Jr. MLB, and great third party games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Super Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat 2 (with blood!), Megaman X2, etc.

Virtual Boy sucked but generally that period had some of the most memorable Nintendo games ever.

Unfortunately there were a bunch of late gen SNES projects like Comanche, FX Fighter, and Star Fox 2 that got canned because of the N64.

I edited my post to just talk about 1995.

1994 was better for Nintendo....but 1995 in the USA was pretty bad.

It was just mostly Virtual Boy outside of Earthbound, Yoshi's Island, and Donkey Kong Country 2.

Except ... '95 was really good. I remember NOA crowing about having the "big 3" fall titles ... Killer Instinct, SMW2: Yoshi's Island, and Donkey Kong Country 2.

Earthbound in the US too.

Third party games like Chrono Trigger were great and Mortal Kombat was still going strong with MK3.

Yoshi's Island, DKC2, Earthbound, and Chrono Trigger I think you can make a pretty good case for being 4 of the 20 best Nintendo console games ever and they all came out in one year. I mean that's not bad at all, Nintendo's 1993 was their weakest SNES year.

1995:

- Game Boy is on its death bed (Pokemon revived it next year)

- SNES is on its death bed

- Virtual Boy is a complete and utter failure

- Uncertainty about the N64

- Only a few standout Nintendo-published games amongst a bunch of Virtual Boy crap

2016:

- 3DS is on its death bed

- Wii U is on its death bed

- Uncertainty about the NX

- Onl a few standout Nintendo-published games amongst a bunch of crap (standouts like Fire Emblem: Fates, Pokemon Sun + Moon, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE)

Sure, when you look at the actual 1st-party titles, the ones that came out in 1995 are pretty much classics, so in that case 1995 > 2016 based on the strength of the titles. But there are a lot of similarities between the two periods----A few great games, platforms on their death beds, and a whole bunch of uncertainty.

Even though those were great games, it was still a pretty tough time to be a Nintendo fan.

SNES wasn't really on its deathbed, it was basking in the afterglow of its post-93 resurgance at that point, sadly 1995 in a lot of ways would be the last year that Nintendo would ever be the market leader of the traditional console market. SNES had a very strong 94/95.

The Genesis gave a good fight through 1991, Nintendo started turning the tide heavily in 1992 though and were well on their way to decisive victory until they made a brutal miscalculation in censoring Mortal Kombat, that allowed Sega to win the '93 holiday season.

Seeing low sales at this point in America, Mr. Yamauchi in anger lashed out at his own son-in-law, Minorau Arakawa NOA's president, to the press (a taboo in Japanese culture, but a massive dressing down) for letting Sega paint the SNES as a "child's toy".

In 1994 Nintendo would reinvent itself under the "Play It Loud" MTV style marketing (shamelessly ripping off Sega, sure, but it worked). Donkey Kong Country would deliver Sega and their hedgehog mascot a devastating blow and not only was Mortal Kombat 2 coming to the SNES with blood, but a in a dramatic turn around, Nintendo was making their own hyper-violent fighter, Killer Instinct, done by the DKC guys.

So 1995 was kind of like a cornonation year for Nintendo, especially as DKC crushed the 32X. Sega was beaten. Virtual Boy was kind of like this bizarre oddity, but to their credit Nintendo was smart enough to kill it quickly so it didn't have much of a lingering effect. I do wish I had picked up one or two Virtual Boys from Blockbuster Video when they were on clearance though by '96 or so ... could've had them for like $40 or $50 a pop.

It's really a shame looking back at this period, with the SNES finishing so strong and Sega fizzling out, Nintendo really easily could've have become the defacto market leader ... all they had to do was agree to use CD-ROM in the N64 even as an add-on and they would've kept their third party partners happy. Sony was really weak in those days, they would not have been able to go toe-to-toe with Nintendo back then, PSX sales were really slow early on (better than the Saturn, but that wasn't saying much).

LOL @ '95 being a terrible year for the SNES. Aside from the obvious (Yoshi's Island and DKC2, some of the greatest games not only on the SNES but of all time), the SNES had a TON of big releases that year, many of which were *gasp* THIRD PARTY TITLES!!! I know, shocking to think that at one time nearly all the big third party titles out there were on the SNES.

The SNES started to wane a bit in '96 due to the Saturn and PS1 already out and the N64 on the horizon, but '96 was still a banner year for Nintendo with the likes of Super Mario RPG and DKC3 on the SNES, along with the release of the N64 and games like Mario 64, Wave Race and Pilotwings.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

The day the Nintendo-PlayStation wasn't released, which lead to PlayStation being born?

The Nintendo E3 2008 Press Conference is worst time I can think of. That press conference was the moment a began my transition away from Nintendo and toward PC gaming. Currently I do not care how infrequently Nintendo releases their games, just as long as they are quality titles.

What about the mediocre-at-best year for the Game Boy, the horrible failure that was the Virtual Boy with its shitty lineup, the uncertainty surrounding Nintendo 64 getting randomly delayed into 1996, the instant success of the PS1 overshadowing the 6-year-old SNES, etc.

You're letting the nostalgia of a few incredible, classic SNES releases overshadow the overall period of mediocrity and uncertainty that Nintendo fans were in during that time. As an example, look at Nintendo the company which had unprecedently low sales at the time, both in the American market via NPD and consolidated as a company with only 354 billion JPY net sales.

The instant success of the PS1? By mid-1996 (around 18 months after the Japanese launch) Sony had shipped ~8m PS1s worldwide. Also, at that time the SNES wasn't even seven years old. As for the Gameboy, is it really important what its lineup was in 1995? At the time all of Nintendo's competitors had failed and weren't going to launch a successor, so Gameboy was top dog by default.

For someone who wants to give history class, you are getting quite a few things wrong. And to top it off, you act like people shouldn't have been satisfied with the SNES's 1995. You are fooling around, right?

Bah, this is exactly why I stopped posting on forums. It's just not worth it. I give up----you win.

oh! this thread again... house of the overdramatization and PS propaganda.
