Review Standards for Videogames: Out of 100 points

Yoshi’s Wooly World

Originality: It takes the art style of a last gen game (granted, with amazing enhancements by comparison) and combines it with an incredibly safe, non-innovative take on a multi decade established series. The two saving graces of this game are how amazing it looks to play and how most levels had their own special impact on gameplay (though non are drastic). Overall, this game was way too close to original formula. Also, the music/sounds in this game sounds like it came straight out of Paper Monster Uncut in many levels (even the music was unoriginal sounding).

Graphics: Looks amazing! I honestly don’t know how you could possibly make this game look better and make yarn look better.

Art Style: Same with the art style. Wonderful looking. Absolutely wonderful. Yet, they already had a yarn based game. Hopefully, they will go with something very drastic next time they do a 2-d themed game (pencil drawing would be amazeballs).

Story: Once again, in a world where it is easy to have 2-d games have decent stories (Trine/Trine 2) and digital/cartoon based concepts having amazing stories (DreamWorks/Pixar), Nintendo continues to troll us by assuming we are all a bunch of 3 year olds that just want to mindlessly jump around for no purpose at all. How difficult would it have been to introduce detailed dialogue? Shovel Knight was amazing because there was actually character development. You started to FEEL for certain characters (including villains). For every amazing story based 2d platformer made by a 3^rd party company, there are 2 or 3 Nintendo games that have either no story or the same story since the 80s.

Controls easy and fluid or difficult and rigid? Controls are easy most of the time (except for when you have to hover and aim and egg and release it before your hovering ends, but that is just skill based and I rarely had issues).

Is it fun? It is a lot of fun to play! Also, has a lot of replay value built in (collectors, extra levels, boss tournament after you beat it, etc).

It has some creative stages and some good music, but man does it get boring after a while.

Also, Shovel Knight does make you feel for certain characters. And they did that rather easily. It doesn't even take much effort. In fact, I think it takes more effort for people at Nintendo to intentionally prevent themselves from doing the natural thing and putting at least a halfway decent story into their game. If I was a developer at Nintendo, I think I'd go crazy if management told me to make stories like they do. It would be so difficult to resist actually making something with high quality in other aspects not also have high quality in the story.

Thank you! Some are longer and some are shorter. I find that my better reviews are ones that I walk away passionate about something, either good (like Arkham City) or bad (Project X Zone).

Many people don't seem to appreciate my review system, but then I get at least one person like you on my posts that make me feel better. I don't want my reviews to be like all the other ones, caring about the same stuff that other reviewers care about. Story is what matters most to me, by far, and so that is how I review my games.

Yeah, I've been meaning to comment on your other reviews but didnt know what to say since I typically agree with what you say XD but I notice they don't always get a lot of attention so I thought Id just let you know I at least like them a lot :3

:) Thanks! Yea some have gotten a lot of attention, but most get buried. Oh well, I have fun doing them. I don't feel like I complete a game unless I write the review and post it first lol. I'd say Tropical Freeze was one of my more commented ones because people went crazy with my review system on it lol. That's around when I started reviewing 2-d games I think. I just posted my star fox 64 3d one just now. I am close to beating Fire Emblem Fates (about 2/3's done) so that one could be next.

My favorite 2D platformer of this gen and that is said buy someone who is not fan of 2D platform games.
