Forums - Sony Discussion - The Golden Bolt Reviews: Ratchet & Clank (2016)

Well, here we are guys.  This one took me a bit longer than I'd liked to have had it because I shifted some plans around and brought on a buddy who had never played the series before, but it's here!  (To think I wanted to get it out by the 15th!)  I tried to do a review in the scope of both a seasoned veteran and newcomer to the series, but admittedly I ended up leaning to the former.  Most of my friend's input was effectively the same as what I was already writing, so the game works on both fronts incredibly well.  BUT it's not without a couple issues.

Obviously, let me know what you guys think.

ALSO, next week I'm tackling Shamu, but after that I'm still not entirely sure what I'm doing.  If you guys have ANY suggestions, I'm open to them!  I want every fifth game or so to be one chosen entirely by others, so if you want to see me tackle something, let me know!

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

I'm finishing the game and then I watch! So tag!

Why would you run through the whole story in a review? I doubt many people who haven't played the game (those that reviews are meant for) would continue watching.

Forgive the double post, you must've posted while I was replying before.

There's a clear spoiler warning in the video, twice actually, with an annotation that lets you skip past the entire Story section.  Some people enjoy having full plot synopses for the games discussed in these reviews.  I know I do - it's the thorough review style of Somecallmejohnny, The Completionist (who actually did this game today too), et alia that inspired me to start the channel in the first place!  Plus, for series fans, I have an obligation to discuss in detail the issues I hold with the plot!

It just seems weird to go through the whole story like that. I've got nothing against the style though. For that I'd say well done.

Well thank you. I personally have always preferred the style of going in detail on every facet of a game in these sorts of reviews, especially when I have significant problems with parts of the game. In this case I went through every single detail to get to the point that none of it ever matters because it's all pretty much filler as far as the plot goes. The only way to really highlight that correctly, in my eyes, was to be completely thorough.

I did completely neglect to put in a timestamp for mobile users though as far as spoilers go, so I noted that and put it in the video description. I've gotta fix that next time.

My only gripe was the end. I mean, what in the hell? Oh I guess everything worked out, and they saved the day?

Had the most rushed, odd ending of almost any game in the series.

My absolute biggest thing was the line after the second act break, where

Qwark and Clank both say nobody died in the Novalis destruction.  Don't death star it if you're gonna save everybody.  I don't care that it's a kid-friendly game, it ruins the impact of the event in question.

Other than that most of my issues are minor, but it never feels fully there to me.  The film should help that for most people, though, thankfully.

Oh you're gonna have a LOT of fun in the Hoverboard races!  Until you go for the Trophy, then you might hate yourself.  I beat the required time twice in a row but came in second and it didn't trip.  They lowered the rubber banding in the most recent patch, though, so it shouldn't be as bad now.
