Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: "40 Million PS4's Shipped As Of March 31"

So maybe 39M sellthrough by end of march and combined sales of these two systems of 60M, give or take. Sounds reasonable enough.

No they sold 4 million to reatilers in this time period (36million >>>> 40 million)and Xbox sold 2-3 million in the same time(19 million>>>>22 million). XOne is doing better YoY too!

Ok. I just don't see the XB1 pushing 2-3M to retailers in 3 months though. Especially when going off the NPD numbers which is tbeir best and biggest market. But I could be wrong.

And I also don't see Sony have 2M units floating around in the channels either. My guess is no more than 1M.

I'm wondering, could game development be considered R&D? I mean... it's development....

But when you exclude items, I'd say this is pretty good performance YoY imo. Also I think right about now would be a good time to buy SNE. I think when the forecast releases, its stock is gonna rise (wether it *should* rise or not is a different question). Yen seems to be strengthening, and the weak yen has really hit Sony hard in the last year due to a lot of dollar-denominated costs. Will be fun in a few weeks to see if I'm right! Although I'm holding SNE with a horizon of a few years rather than short term, so for me it doesn't change too much.

Not quite that simple.  Some segments benefit from the yen and others suffer.

Overall, sales and revenue are actually down more on a constant currency basis.  In other words, as a group Sony did better due to the current Yen rate.

Sales and revenue down about 1% YOY, but that translates to being down 4% on constant currency basis.

And I'd expect SNE to drop today after these results (where is the growth?) and the interest rate decision in Japan.  I could be wrong.

Yeah, but all in all, the weak yen has been massively detrimental to Sony's business. Net impact is something like 1 billion to the operating income.

EDIT: For the record, I don't expect the stock to be up on these news, the result wasn't really good compared to expectations (nor was it really bad, it was just lukewarm). However I think the forecast when it's released will surprise investors and drive the stock upwards, at least temporarily.

I want Kaz at E3 to introduce Crash if it is there. Kaz and Shu would get the crowd going and maybe a guest appearance from uncle Jacky T.....

The Ps4 exists in 70 + countries and you dont think that there are 2 million ps4 in stores? Even if you can buy it in every shop and its nowwhere outsold?

Vgc is relatively close. That's great news.

For this time of year, no.  2 million in the stores would be way too much.  During the holidays yes, they're going to ship a ton to ensure there's plenty on the shelves.

No I don't.

Even if we assume that the PS4 is available in 100 countries. Then divide  2M by that we end up with an average of 20k consoles sitting on store shelves. This is really loose math cause there are countries that get a much higher shipment than others and some countries don't even sell up to 20k consoles a month much less have that number sitting on shelves.

Another thing to consider is that Sony makes around 1M+ PS4s a month. And manufacturing facilities aren't warehouses. So once they are made they are shipped out. Sony can't be be making that many consoles each month for global supply and have about twice that amount still in circulation. Just doesn't make sense.

I domt see there being any more than 1.3M consoles on store shelves max, and don't forget that every month another 1-1.4M consoles gets added to that number.

There are some here more adept at figuring stuff like this out. I think it's possible using sold through announcements and dates and shipped announcements and dates to approximate exactly how many consoels Sony is selling each month. And then factor in announced yoy variances...... well, or just use VGC numbers

In germany there are more then 20k stores which sell ps4´s if every store only has 5 ps4´s there are 100k in the stores........ only for germany.........

Because of this i think ps4 is at 37,7 million consoles sold. So ps4 overtracked by 1 million +  and XOne is at 22.5 m i think perhaps at 23.5 m because of statements from ea and activision or some esport accosiations (sold to retailers). So Xone has 1.8 million in stores and ps4 2.0-2.3 in stores because of the larger numbers of published countries.
