Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: "40 Million PS4's Shipped As Of March 31"

Not sure if this has been mentioned but Sony said that they expect to sell in more than 17.7 million units during FY2016.

In other words they expect this fiscal year to beat last fiscal year in terms of Hardware Unit Sales.

The full forecast will be released on May 24th I believe.

With PSVR, a new PS4, and the biggest First party games coming this year, is natural to think that will sell more than last year.

Sure, but I wanted to provide the official statement sony made on the conference call last week

Well it has definitely fallen behind PS2 so that's a bit dissapointing. Though looking at all the great games PS2 hade by now it's not very surprising, and obviously Xbox One is bigger competition than the original Xbox was.

It has? What were PS2's numbers by this point? At the same time, if that's true, it's hardly disappointing to me. I was one of a few that said it would eventually fall behind. The PS2 was an anomaly. I don't expect anything to clear it.

Was it really such a widespread belief that the PS4 would beat the PS2? That's quite disappointing if true, just shows how much wishful thinking impacts predictions, rather than the cold, hard reality of the market. I never believed it had a chance.

Do we know that for a fact?

going by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2_sales

March 31, 2000  = 1.41

March 31, 2002 = 28.68

March 31, 2003 = 51.20  (3years after launch)

PS4 took 2 years and 4months to ship 40m.

Lets give it another 6months and then compair that number to the March 31, 2003 number of the PS2.

Then we should have the full picture, and be able to say one way or the other.

For the first nine months of the PS2's life, it was only available in Japan. It's not even comparable to the PS4, it beats the crap out of it.

Your right if you talk about the selling rate. If you look at smaller sections of time periodes.

But as soon as you talk sales over time, its the only way to do it, 1 consoles launch date vs the others, and units sold, over that time periode.

Im just pointing out we dont know for a fact that the PS4 is behinde the curve yet.

6 months from now we can compair and see.

Remember that the PS2 was available only in Japan from March until late October 2000, when it released in North America, and then another month (late November) before launching in Europe. So the first fiscal year only includes 4.5 months and 5.5 months respectively of actual sales from its strongest markets. The PS4, meanwhile, was available in North America and Europe withing two weeks of one another (mid-late November) and launched in Japan after, in February the year after.

The PS2's staggered launch makes it hard to compare from the very start. The tough nut to crack for the PS4 will be the several consecutive 20 million + selling years of the PS2 and its immense lifespan and influence on both mainstream and partly enthusiast gaming, as well as the impact from broader multimedia functionality.

I Don't think that at this point the Xbox One, is bigger competition than the Gamecube + Dreamcast + Original Xbox, was a total of over 55-60 Millions of competition (45-50 if you take away the Dreamcast) from 2001, to 2005, in only 4 years, i don't think that Xbox One, will be able to achieve this much until november 2017, because until now Sales are down, and counting the Launch, in a little more than 2 years,  it still not sold half of what the combined number of the others did.

Competition still the same but now the games take more time to be made, with the Money that Square Enix, made Final Fantasy X, now is considered the Budget of a Indie game, this is something that Rock Star, and Square Enix, can change with ease, but those companies have yet to release their biggest games, in the PS2 Era, they released one of the biggest in the 1-2 year of the Console.

So PS4, need to ship over 11 Millions from now to  November, to stay on par against the PS2 ?, i don't think that is impossible when Last Year's Q3, they shipped over 3 Millions of units, and Q4, over 8-9 Millions of Units
