Forums - Nintendo Discussion - NX 2017 Lineup Predictions

Now that I've recovered, I'm starting to think about what Nintendo might be planning for the NX's first calendar year. They are obviously working on major unannounced projects for the platform, but things are weird considering the lack of information and mysterious nature of the machine. So here are some guesses as to what Nintendo could have planned for the NX in 2017, with reasons why I think these ideas may or may not be plausible.

The Legend of Zelda (100%) - Virtually guaranteed. I wouldn't be surprised if this game was delayed to be a launch title, similar to how some say Twilight Princess could have been released earlier as a GameCube exclusive. Regardless, seeing how this is the one thing Nintendo is willing to make playable at E3 this year, I doubt they're going to delay it for too long.

Mario Kart 9 (80%) - These games have been released roughly every three years for a while now, and even if MK9's not playable at E3, it could still be available by Holiday 2017. Especially since MK8 did so well despite low Wii U sales.

3D Super Mario (75%) - There hasn't been one of these in a while, and they always do well enough. Heck, the 3DS showed that Nintendo is willing to launch a 3D Mario and Mario Kart within a few weeks.

Paper Mario: Color Splash (50%) - Remember in May 2006, when Super Paper Mario was announced for the GameCube, with a release date of October 2006? History could easily repeat itself. The main reason this isn't a higher likelihood is that Nintendo will at least try to salvage the Wii U's last holiday, since 2016 doesn't have a Zelda to save it anymore.

Splat2n (50%) - My guess is that Splatoon is for the Wii U what Super Smash Bros was for the N64: a great success in an untapped arena for Nintendo. And seeing how Melee came out less than three years after the original, I can imagine a similar time frame for Splat2n. Unlike Melee, there is no need to limit development to under 15 months. This franchise is a great sucess, and the only reason we wouldn't see a sequel in the near future is to give the second entry more time to cook.

Mario Party 11 (45%) - Mario Party is always going to happen. It's just a question of timing. And right now, I doubt that ND Cube has too many distractions.

Pikmin 4 (35%) - I suspect that Pikmin is in the works and will see a new entry for the NX. But I also doubt that this will be one of the first priorities at Nintendo EPD.

Super Mario Maker 2 OR New Super Mario Bros 3X (30%) - A Mario Maker ssequel's biggest problem would be taking advantage of all the existing content. That means using all those levels made for the Wii U, which could take some time to overcome. And although another NSMB is an obvious choice, these games don't seem to be particularly good as launch titles. Note that NSMBWii sold over 28 million after being released halfway through the Wii's life.

Hyrule Warriors 2 (25%) - Has Omega Force ever stopped working on Hyrule Warriors these past few years? Even Legends can be seen as them testing the waters for new ideas and characters. And more seriously, this could be released a few months after the main Zelda and include its characters and environments for excellent timing.

Luigi's Mansion 3 (15%) - There have been rumors about this, and Dark Moon was a big hit. It could happen!

Metroid (2%) - As If!

Love and tolerate.

Here's my prediction: fuck you, Nintendo.

For 2017 as a whole? Well, it's hard to guess, but I would say:

Zelda - 100% (duh).

Pikmin 4 - 90% (Because why not? It's releasing so late in the console cycle... Nintendo said Zelda will be the only playable game at E3 2016, which means Pikmin 4 will probably not be revealed there. Guess what's not appearing at E3 too? That's right, the NX. ).

3D Mario - 80% (3D World released back in 2013, so the team should have enough time to put out a new one in 2017).

Luigi's Mansion 3 - 70% (Many rumors relating it to NX, not to mention Dark Moon came in 2013, so Next Level/Nintendo should have time to make it happen. Also, Dark Moon sold a lot (4 or 5m iirc), so it's an important "filler" material for a period like summer).

Animal Crossing HD - 70% (It skipped the Wii U and New Leaf came in 2013, that's enough reason to have it ready for the first year. And it's not like Animal Crossing is extremely hard to develop or anything).

Retro's Game - 50% (I can see this going either way, honestly).

Of course there are many other games, but these are the ones I can comment atm.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Pikmin 4 was mentioned by Miyamoto as being "close to completion" late last year. Not sure what that means for your guesses. It could potentially get moved over to NX, but it's less likely than it was for Zelda since Pikmin's not a huge seller and Nintendo still need something for Wii U later this year.

Since this is my first post on VGChartz, I'm going to respond to each and every prediction you made.

Nintendo of America's website has said that Zelda U will be released for both Wii U and Nintendo NX in March 2017. That virtually guarantees that it's not only coming to NX next year, but that it is a launch title. FWIW, this already points to a more successful year one on the market than the Wii U had.

Mario Kart 9 is a good prediction. If it comes out next year, I think that it would almost certainly be a holiday release. Every time someone mentions Mario Kart on NX, I'm always reminded of that rumored Diddy Kong Racing reboot thing.

I think a 3D Super Mario is about the most obvious prediction in the world when it comes to NX launch window titles. I'm very excited to see where Nintendo decides to take the series, since it's now been three years since our last 3D Mario, and even longer since the "true" 3D Mario that everyone is always clamoring for.

Regarding "Paper Mario", I think that your point about Nintendo trying to salvage Wii U's last holiday is valid. I seriously doubt this will be an NX game. If you looked up the definition of "filler" in the dictionary, you'd find the cover art for Paper Mario: Color Splash. NX won't need filler in year one if the rumored third party partnerships come to fruition.

I believe that Splatoon 2 is almost certainly going to be in our homes by the end of 2018, but I'm not sure if a year one release for NX is likely. Splatoon was an undeniably huge success, but Nintendo didn't know how it would perform until it was out and selling millions. I think it's more likely we get an enhanced port of Splatoon in 2017 and then maybe a sequel in 2018.

I don't think the timing is right for Mario Party 11. I think it's possible that we see it by the end of the year, but Nintendo might feel more of a need to get this game out when it's filler time midway through year 2.

Miyamoto has said that Pikmin 4 is deep into development. I imagine that the development process was originally for Wii U, but since we still haven't heard anything about this game, it seems unlikely that it's Nintendo's great big sendoff title for the Wii U. I think it will be one of three of Nintendo's big NX launch titles (along with Zelda and probably Mario).

A New Super Mario Bros. is another likelihood (read: certainty) at some point, although I think the Big N would want to avoid oversaturating the market with Mario games like they did with Wii U early on. People were sick of it by 2014. NSMB would certainly pull in a lot of money early on, though, so who knows?

Hyrule Warriors 2? Huh, I hadn't thought about this one. Hyrule Warriors pushed the limits of the Wii U, so I'd definitely like to see it on some more powerful hardware. I could see this being an early fall title, for better or for worse.

I would love Luigi's Mansion 3 to be a fall title for the NX. All aboard the hype train! Unfortunately, I think your 15% chance prediction is probably spot on.

Metroid has a better shot than I think most people are giving it. I could easily see this game launching as Nintendo's one big summer game. Retro Studios has been working on SOMETHING since early 2014, and we have absolutely no idea what it is. Unless it actually ends up being Diddy Kong Racing. Still, I'd rather have Metroid.

So, since you gave us yours, here's what MY predicted NX Nintendo lineup for year 1 would include:

Launch
Pikmin 4
Zelda U
Super Smash Bros. 4 Definitive Edition (Wii U + 3DS port)

Launch Window
3D Mario

Summer
Metroid

Fall/Holiday
Luigi's Mansion 3 (I'm banking on that rumor being true!)
Splatoon (Wii U port)
Mario Kart 9

Early 2018
Pokemon game a la Pokemon Colosseum/Pokemon Stadium

Looks pretty good to me!

I'd rather be playing Metroid Prime

I know it probably wasn't the intent, but this post made me burst out laughing.

Hello guys im new here.

I don´t know about the full year lineup, but i truly believe that the launch lineup will have Zelda (duh), Pikmin 4 and Retro´s new Title.

My hope is to have at least 4 new big games by Nintendo at launch: Zelda (100% sure) plus, a Fire emblem home, Mario kart 9 and a new IP. In addition i think they have to remaster Xenoblade and Bayonetta, game that fail on WiiU but that can do well in attracting new user on a new platform.

I expect Pikmin 4,Zelda and 2D mario. I think those are the obvious ones. I think a splatoon 2 would be too early. I believe they only recently stopped with the updates. Mario kart 9 could be one but doubt it. As for other contenders. No, I can't think of any.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true
