Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is NX off to a bad start? Destined to flop? or just a slow starter?

How will NX sell when it launches?

Hot cakes baby! 40 18.02%

Slow starter, but sales pick up fast! 35 15.77%

Sales wise, its launch will match the Wii Us. 41 18.47%

wtf nintendo? no E3 revea... 106 47.75%

Total:222

That they aren't even talking about NX at E3, 9 months before it is supposed to be released, worries me.

So we know its launching globally March 2017.

Which is not typical for home consoles, usually they launch before the holidays and make use of the "brand new hot thingy" and the massive amounts people spend on holidays to get off to a flying start sales wise.

NX is launching right after.... when people have already used their hard earned $ on christmas presents.

Home consoles resently get revealed at E3.

Its just how it goes, is the single biggest week for gameing in the year. Lots of press around, so its a good time to get your message out there. News gets picked up and suddenly its all over the web. Basically free marketing.

Nintendo wont have NX at E3, or talk about it at E3.

Then theres the Wii U. Lets be honest its not going out on a good note.

It could potentially make buyers more hesitant to get a NX right out the gate.

What do you guys think?

March isn't an odd time to release hardware, I recall PS2 and PS4 released in Japan at that time, this is also a global release so they likely picked a time that fits all regions.

On the part about missing the holidays NX is likely using the classic strategy of selling to avid early adoptors first then building up for it's first holiday, we don't even know what type of platform or platforms NX is it could very well have a home console and portable variant. Wii U hasn't been on a good note since release and tbh the GC also didn't go out on a good note either and that proved to be irrelevant to its successor.

Both PS4 and X1 were not revealed at E3 they had their own events for that, NX is likely going to have a specific ND for its reveal later this year probably September or Q4 when it's closer to release to go into details about it. E3 used to be the main week for gaming but in recent years and the progression of streaming it has declined which is why more developers are skipping it each year.

Not a big deal on either front.

Them not appearing at E3 in a meaningful way is a loss for fans will look bad on them, but a stand alone reveal is actually probably better for promotion of the NX. As long as they invite presss and make a big deal out of it.

I wouldn't really read too much into that.

I think they might not want to show at E3 because it gives their competetion too much time (almost 9 months) to prep/prepare potentially copy certain ideas too ... depending on what they got.

I mean I predict a lot but honestly it's hard to know with Nintendo. If they have some kind of new fangled concept that is a killer idea, if I was running Nintendo I would probably wait until Nov/December to unveil, as much it might infuriate game fans on the message boards, they forget about all that stuff the moment you start showing games anyway.

Or the system could just suck, lol, I don't know, but I do think Nintendo has something here that's considerably better than what the Wii U was.

PS4Neo is launching this holiday so there's nothing they could copy. But yeah, there's nothing for Sony to copy from Nintendo, PS4Neo is a new PS4 while NX is a new system. Sony is the industry leader again, whatever the 3rd place company is coming up with has to be groundbreaking for Sony to even consider them as rivals, let alone copy their ideas.

Yeah then again you probably could've said the exact same thing circa 2004/05 too.

One thing about Nintendo that I don't doubt is they are a home run hitter. Even if they're older and look worn out, they can knock one out of the park when you least expect it.

I'm just always going by what Mr. Iwata said, they didn't want to share details about the NX because they were worried about it being copied. I have no idea what "it" may be, but who's to say it isn't something interesting. Nintendo is many things, but boring ain't one of them.

Its not launching this year so you shouldn't really be worried. Short reveal to release turnovers seem to be the far more effective thing in tech and gaming nowadays.

E3 would have worked but so would a standalone event in September where they can have ALL the headlines to themselves.

The decision is very curious though,  they could be making last minute changes like what happened with the Wii right before its 2005 reveal. If Novemeber comes  and no reveal, then I'd be worried.

Nintendo doesn't play by anybody's rules, not even their own.

i think they know what they are doing, they dont want their momentum being ruined by the PS4K.

One has to wonder what' Nintendo is thinking. You're not talking about NX at the biggest game trade show in the world...but the thing is coming out at the first few months of the year...not November. When are they going to delve into more information? What is NX, so that they think they can release it without E3? Do they want to keep the technology a secret from everyone else that bad? Or are they just plain bananas? One has to wonder.

It's obvious that the secrecy is down to a certain concept or even a combination of concepts the platform features as they wouldn't bother hiding a console that simply ups power, I remember the Wii was revealed and the controller was not shown with it. The only clue for now is to go back and look at the patents that have been filed.

The 2017 release date also adds a question of the choice of GPU and such they've gone with as they'll have more choice now, not being at E3 indicates that the hardware may not be finalized or available in that regard as AMD said they begin production of their new win in the second half of the year after E3.

The question is: why the delay? Every piece of info we had pointed to a holydays 2016 release, but they moved it to march 2017. Nintendo just abandoned its best period of time to sell a console, and basically left the WiiU abandoned. Was the NX not ready hardware or software-wise? Did the PS4K and PSVR scared Nintendo? Did they want to give WiiU owners the feeling (keyword here being feeling) of full 5 years of support? What was it?

Could be several things, yield issues with AMD's 14nm chips could be a big problem. Can't ship a system without its GPU. Not having enough software is always a problem for Nintendo and if they were having so much trouble getting PS3/360 level games finished on time ... would it really be a shocker that they'd suffer a delay making a jump to PS4/XB1 level graphics perhaps?

It's amazing how pathetic and stupid you are, in case you aren't just trolling. I can't stretch how ridiculous it is to say Wi U games are "ps360 level" and that wii u's successor will only have ps4 level. Your meltdown will be beautiful.
