Gears of War Creator: "I Hope Microsoft Doesn't Screw It Up"

by Eddie Makuch on April 26, 2016

This year's Gears of War 4 is the first entry in the shooter series created internally at Microsoft and without the help of its original designer Cliff Bleszinski. Now, Bleszinski has discussed moving on from the series and how he hopes Microsoft will do right by the franchise and its fans.

"Now [the Gears of War franchise] is at Microsoft and I hope they don't screw it up. My fingers are crossed," Bleszinski told VideoGamer.com at a press event for his next game, LawBreakers.

He went on to describe his separation from the Gears of War series as being similar to a break-up.

"It's kind of like breaking up with an ex and wanting to see them get re-married but not to somebody who is better-looking than you," he said, referring to Microsoft.

Microsoft acquired the Gears of War franchise from creator Epic Games in January 2014. Bleszinski exited Epic before that, in October 2012, going on to establish LawBreakers studio Boss Key.

It's not yet clear what Bleszinski thinks of Gears of War 4's gameplay, but he did respond to the emotional first trailer, saying it made him "misty."

Though Bleszinski no longer works on the Gears of War franchise, veteran series producer Rod Fergusson is leading development on the series at new Microsoft studio The Coalition.

The Gears of War 4 release date is set for October 11, but if you buy the $100 Ultimate Edition you can play four days early. Additionally, the game's multiplayer open beta started April 25 and runs through May 1.

And he's not the only one.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

That makes sense. I hope they don't screw it up too. Though, when was the last time a series got better when it changed developers?

Before someone says it. No, Halo is worse under 343.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Very rarely. Retro has done great work with Metroid and Donkey Kong. And Ready at Dawn did a commendable job with God of War and Daxter. But there aren't many success stories.

Microsoft in particular has a pretty rough track record when it comes to this sort of thing. Still, I'm optimistic after playing the Gears open beta. I really hope The Coalition delivers.

And let me go on record by saying that I have always respected and admire Gears of War from afar. I wish the best for this.

I always like to point out that it was Epic who already screwed up the franchise with Judgment. And Gears4 beta is already on another level compared to it.

Any measure of game quality is an opinion. But the general consensus is that the 343 Halo games aren't as good as the Bungie ones.

They wont but at thé same time the new Gears wont be as good as thé previous ones i think, we saw that with Halo, Uncharted.... Patern.

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

They really need a launch to go amazingly well. No Halo V issues, no Masterchief issues, just people loving the game by word of mouth.

Let's hope they get it right and a are ready for it.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.
