I mean, it's a great game for sure, but I would never rank it above any of the other 3D Mario games (Besides 3D Land, I guess). Things like the time limit, linear level design and the overused cat suit really drag this game down imo.

Edit: VGChartz seems really unstable for me today, are any of you having issues as well?

Yeah, the site doesn't work very well for me...

About the thread, the game is definitely unnapreciated. It's outstanding, and I think it's the 2nd best 3D mario ever made, just behind Galaxy 2. Why? Level variety,  different characters, it's more fast-paced, it has a multiplayer coop mode, its difficulty curve is well adjusted, its graphics are outstanding... Some people don't like it because the levels are short and it's not "pure 3D". And? That's not what makes this game great.

Underrated? NO its has a very high metacritic both user and critic. Also who rates Super Mario Sunshine as the best 3D Mario. Popular believer hold Mario 64 or Mario Galaxy as the best Mario game. However I SM3DW is a fantastic game Local co-op. Brilliant. But single player is boring AF. Also they completely missed the boat by not having Online play. A complete wasted opportunity.

Underappreciated perhaps, but underrated? It got a 93 on metacritic lol.

Indeed.

Also it's a Cat themed game, of course it's great.

You should play Bubsy 3D then...

It's a wonderful game. Don't let the same complainers convince you otherwise. In 20 years, it will still be a blast, unlike Mario 64. Yes, 64 was hugely influential, but its design is extremely repetitive, it has awful bosses (spinning bowser by his tail in 3 battles...wow, so awesome), going through the same level 6 times gets really old, etc. It is still a great game and has a wonderful central hub and some good tunes, but all of the other 3D mario games (except maybe sunshine) are massively improved and better.

I don't think 3D World is as good as the galaxies (arguably the best games ever, imo), but if I were to replay any of them, it would be 3D World. it is just a fun, well-designed, highly enjoyable game. not every game needs to be genre-defining.

It's 93 on Metacritic. How can anyone possibly call it underrated?

Its under-appreciated, not underrated. Its got a similar problem that SSB has. Its not considered a real 3D Mario game much like how SSB is often labeled as anything other than a fighter

Said by the director himself though...

Why you gotta diss SM64? 3DW isn't exactly on point with it's bosses either. Most bosses we beat within 30 seconds. The ones we didn't beat in 30 seconds, we beat within a minute. We rarely lost lives. And you fight most of them over as well.

I get your point about going through the same level six times, but remember that you didn't always go to the same part of the level every time. Many levels would change based on the star you were going after, or have parts opened and closed based on it too.

But back on topic, I wholehearted agree that SM3DW got way too much hate by the forever aloners who wanted another copy-paste job of Galaxy. Coincedentally, I just beat it yesterday with my chick. The game was designed to be enjoyed by a group, and is more fun that way. I miss having a more non-linear Mario as well, but star hunting in 3DW is just as fun, and there was plenty of variety to keep things fresh enough to the end. The collection of powerups were also the best since Super Mario 3. It would have been nicer if the bosses had more challenge in the primary levels, but ah well. Can't have it all.

Meh, it's ok, but it never drew me in as much as other Mario games.
