I don't understand why they would release the film about a week before Civil War hits theaters.

I understand they wanted to release at the same time as the game but still.

Better than a week after I guess, or the same week.

A lot of the movies' scenes doubled down as cutscenes in the game though, so this movies' budget is certainly not on the level of many of the big budget animation film.

I would still imagine it not being below 50 million budget, the lowest animation budget I think I seen on big screen movie is like 30 million, but those are not really on the same level as this movie and the higher on the list. I would be very surprised if the budget of this film is not 60-80 million when it comes out.

The game and movie were both made at the same time with assets being exchanged by both Insomniac and Rainmaker so the budget shouldn't be tha high. I doubt it actually reached $50m let alone exceed it. The LEGO movie had a prod budget of just $60million, and Minions had $74million and those look way better than this one. I predict it to gain about $20 million max domestically and probably around $30-40m worldwide. It's getting most of its profit from the game and not the movie.

Second review is in with a 2/5, so it wasn't completely trashed but it was heavily criticised for being derivative and using cheap humour. Then again, it seems the reviewer didn't like the humour in Deadpool or Kick Ass, so I guess if you liked the humour in those movies you might consider upgrading that review to 3 stars.

Ouch! 20 reviews now with on 4 positive reviews, so 24% Tomato score. This is one of the lower review scores for a video game movie. Disappointing, but not unexpected since they emotionally flatlined the remake game compared to the original. If they'd turned the original game into the movie, and then had the actual game being different in that it was being told from a different perspective it might have worked better.

Well, it's not releasing here for another 10 or 12 weeks and given how it's likely to perform badly it may not even release in theatres here. Actually I hope it does skip theatres here that way I don't have to choose between supporting one of my favourite franchises by paying to the movie, and doing what I do with all movies that review this poorly: ignore them and maybe watch them when they come out on Blu-ray or even get played on TV.

I bet if the Pixar folks had been shown a picture of Ratchet and Clank, and told to make a buddy space adventure movie, and that's all they knew about R&C they would have made an 80%+ movie.

But I also doubt that would've been a Ratchet & Clank movie

Anyway, shame about the reviews. I'll probably still watch it though but any hopes of it doing good at the box office are firmly crushed now. Oh well. At least the game did/will do/does great.

I'd rather see a good movie with Ratchet and Clank in it than a shit Ratchet and Clank movie. Honestly, the story in the original game was better for adapting into a movie than the story in this remake. If they'd actually made the movie based on the original story, and left the game as telling the story from an alternative perspective that would have been better.

Yeah. I'm still planning on going to see it tomorrow. I'll let you know what I think. :P

I look forward to seeing what you think, but I have a feeling you'll be taking one for the team. There's really no excuse for this movie to be lower than 40% on RT. Someone done really screwed up with this.

I wonder if this will hurt game sales. I don't see it helping at all, but maybe it will have no effect.

But what I'm saying is that you have to consider some of that budget was shared between the movie and the video game. Those cutscenes would've been made for the game, even if the movie wasn't made (but maybe not quite at this quality). The story etc. would also have been written for the game either way, so some costs would've been incurred either way, thus this movie will have a lower budget than what is normal. They also borrowed models and assets from Insomniac, further reducing costs.

Also no way it had a 80 million budget. The last full theatrical release Rainmaker Entertainment (the company behind this) made (Escape from Planet Earth) seems like it had a similar budget to this, and that had a budget of 40 million $. No way this is far above that, if at all.

you have no idea how much CGI animated films cost. Even the most terrible ones (that look awful) often can cost 10s of milions. if this were a drawn cartoon film or claymation MAYBE it would be much lower, but anyone downplaying the investment in this is not being realistic.

We're talking about an hour and a half film. the video game will use nowhere near that many cutscenes, nor is it likely that the scenes are exact duplicates. Sony will lose money on Ratchet & Clank if it performs at all based on its reviews
