Forums - Gaming Discussion - PSN alone almost generated the same sales than all of Nintendo in 2015

So ? It's nothing surprising when you know there's million of people who are willing to pay a forced online service by Sony ...

PS+ games for 3 platforms, cloud saves, online play....How does Nintendo's free service compare to PSN or XBL?

Does make sense considering the userbase is 3 times larger but is interesting to think about the scope..

Kinda amazing how much money you can generate when you have your successful product on the market, block online play behind a paywall and entice people with week offers and other promotions.

Weak*

But yeah, you're right about it being weak. But before during the later years of PS3, the games were excellent and there were plenty..... I suspect it will get better once they feel they have enough games to go back on with alternatives if deals fall through. If not I will be disappointed.

The success of the service is based on the legacy of the PS3 and all the good will they built up.

But it's PS4, PS3, for PSN Vita vs 3DS, DS, Wii U and Wii for which Nintendo still sells software. Even though 7th gen software is pretty much dead.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Nobody is forced to pay for PS+. That's like saying that people are forced to buy Nintendo games.

You're obviously not litteraly forced to do so but if you try to play a game without paying for PS+ like Destiny( or any online multiplayer based game ) you won't be able to experience the game at his full potential b'cause you can't get acess to the multiplayer. Basically, your content is getting cut.

This system is insidious.

Maybe its the game which is bad if its relying only on online to be enjoyable?

Link , because what I remember was the charts showed Sony most profitable year during the PS2 hey day was equal to nintendo's best year , but many people thought it would be more given the huge retail I also remember the PS3 had eaten up those profits , so while I agree with you about profit over the long run ,I'm not sure about Nintendo's best one year profit being greater than sony's total.

This should be good enough. There are obviously a few years missing at the end.

Sony's total on this graph with very rough maths: ~300 billion yen
Nintendo's best year: ~550 billion yen

Sony hasn't been doing too hot in the years that are missing. Should average a profit of ~50 billion yen per year.

you mentioned the profits from gaming earlier in your original post. does this graphic show the results from the SCE branch or of Sony as a whole? and why does it stop at 2011? thanks

It should be remembered when using these numbers that Gamboy and DS have saved Nintendo most of these years. The home console branch has not been this profitabe (except for Wii).

I dont get why so many People are "mad" about paying for Services like PS+ or Xbox Gold, i mean so is paying for an internet Connection also "Bullshit" in your opinion?!? Im absolutely fine with it paying 50 Euro/Year for a Service like this, also you get free Games. Ok mabye a lot of People dont like them and think its "Bullshit" because they arent Triple A Title, but what do you expect!?

And if Nintendo would go the same way i wouldnt be surprised or mad, but they are mabye not in the Position to do something like this, thats why.

I would perhaps have been fine a few years ago... nowadays, I can spend weeks not playing, and play only a few hours a month online. I mean if my game of the month is UC4, I will only play a few hours online. Spending for that is really annoying.

Also, it still a twisted business model, as the online mode can be a reason to buy a game, and is a support for paying download. Also, they get more revenue from sales on PSN (direct sale), so we are already paying for the service. You are not charged by steam, itunes. It's OK for an ever expanding MMO, but it's a lot for a few servers here and there.

I wonder if this is Sony's cut of it or if it's just total revenue (before the pubs/devs of sold games get their cut).

Regardless it shows how much money a successful console can bring in with 3rd parties on board.

If I posted that, it would be sarcasm. Why? Because Sony's profits from gaming aren't impressive when they have three things going for them: Strong third party support, dominance in the home console market and subscription fees for online multiplayer.

My fun fact of the day: Nintendo's single-biggest year in profits from video games is greater than the profits Sony made through PlayStation's entire lifetime.

Yes, I know. That's not funny.

your 1st staytment makes no sense and sounds childish

do you have legit sources for the 2nd  statement? -   pretty sure that A) it s not true and B) Sony only recently started breaking out their gaming division P & L s so it would be difficult if not impossible to know how much Sony has made from their gaming division historically unless Sony has stated as much outside their normal  earnings and reporting
