The Virtual Reality market has never been as captivating or lively as it is today, and with PSVR as the third major player in the market, there is plenty of choice for consumers. PSVR will launch this coming October and apparently, it far and away has the most attention of prospective American buyers.
According to a report from SuperData, a total of 6 million Americans are preparing to purchase PS4's virtual reality headset. While this is a very encouraging number for Sony, the research firm goes on to doubt the inventory that will be available at launch. Much like was the case with the PS4 when it launched, PSVR will most likely be in short supply this October.
When you look at Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, slightly less are planning on picking up PSVR's competitors. 5 million say they will pick up Rift and 2 million are looking to purchase a Vive. Both headsets from HTC and Oculus have been out on the market for weeks now, while PSVR still has yet to launch.
When it comes to consumer mindshare, Sony appears to have the advantage over both Rift and Vive. SuperData goes on to report that 28 percent of Americans have heard of PSVR, while 22 percent have heard of Oculus, 21 percent know of Samsung's Gear VR and a mere 5 percent are aware of HTC Vive.
Perhaps what is most telling about the report is that 52 percent of Americans are not interested in picking up a headset or they do not know what VR is. The latter half of that statement is what is the biggest challenge for VR right now: educating people who have no idea what VR is.
To break things down further, 16 percent say they are going to buy a device "at some point," 26 percent believe the hardware is too expensive and 49 percent are unaware of headset brands. More information from the report can be found here. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are available now, while PSVR will drop this coming October.
The PS5 Exists.
