Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft in unique position to disrupt Sony's console reign

Im no tech wiz, but if these consoles are actually very underpowered, what do you recommend for next gen?

Mind you, i payed for the newly launched PS3 800$ (bought it in Panama) and for the PS4 i payed 1000$ (bought it in Argentina) so im willing to pay good money for a future proofed console, but how many of us are in the market?

Just look at the PS3 and all the price debacle.

I would agree with a 0.5 console for next gen, but with a proper planning since the beggining so it doesnt caught the developers by surprise, like it happened with the PS4 NEO.

Just look at all the developers opinions regarding this 0.5 console, they are fucking annoyed.

LOL at the writer.

We also have rumors of XB1.5 and NX running 4K, if anything I think the entire gaming industry is "upgrading" together. Some people are just hating that PS4 is catching all the attention.

Really? I thought that was the Nintendo NX...

Before believing any of this, we first need proof of a PS4.5 or PS4K or whatever it's being called... Microsoft aren't in a position to disrupt Sony's "console reign" if this device doesn't even exist... can't people just wait until AFTER E3 to see if this thing is even real before making silly claims...

People in VGChartz seems to love that.

They think every rumor is true and write a fucking essay.

What did you expect from life?

The site actually has a couple decent links. I still wish I had not visited it. To use a term I seem to dust off on VGChartz quite a bit: Hyperbole. And some malformed ideas. And clickbait. MS will almost certainly be doing this, upgrading mid-gen, in some form as well.

You do know that Nintendo started this and MS made it into a thing right?

Microsoft is dead in the water with the ONE. there is no coming back with this console. maybe they will do things right with their next console

Dead in the water? If so, then the WiiU and the Vita must be mummies...

I don't see how a marginally upgraded PS4 gives MS any shot at disrupting PS4. They lost the gen with the reveal. Also, lots of people are still hoping MS has something up their sleeve that represents a much better upgrade than what Sony is apparently doing. I have long said these consoles are weak. The PS4K is still pretty weak. I really hope if MS is going to do something similar, it's a much larger upgrade. Outside of maybe the ability to play 4K BR's, I don't see a reason to pay for such a small upgrade.

So long as it's not prohibitely expensive, it should be alright...

I know that the big 3 are all rumored to be dipping their toes into upgradable hardware. as to who STARTED it, or why that would possibly matter, I haven't a clue. So what? Sew buttons.

It looks more like a desperate attempt to preserve Windows 10 power if and when PC and non-PC markets eventually merge for the majority of uses, marginalising the importance of MS main near-monopoly to a niche, albeit a very large one.

Your argument is flawed. Liking it or not, they could still just release a regular PS4 game with zero improvements, since PS4K runs all previous PS4-only games without issues. Even if it is a PITA, they cannot ignore the bigger install base.

PS2 was a PITA compared to the OG Xbox and that didn't changed the fact that PS2 had a lot of 3rd party exclusives. Devs may complain as they wish, but the guy who makes the decision is a high-up that is looking at install bases and sales. He choses the platforms and he decides.

You also are overestimating the Win 10 Dev mode. On X1, right now, it only allows to create universal apps, that will indeed run without changes between platforms. However, they use an abstraction layer with severe limitations (like only using 1 GB of RAM). Maybe most indies will like it, but AAA games will still be developed the same way they are today, with a PC and X1 version being created separated.

Even if you could do one single version for both, PC + X1 software sales combined are still substantially less than just the PS4 version in 95% of the cases. So still, the guy on the suit doesn't give a damn about what their devs find hard or not. They are paid to do what he wants.

The only ways I can see MS (if the don't do X1.5) getting an advantage is:
A- Sony release the PS4K but screws OG PS4 owners with things like PS4K exclusives, games running badly on OG unit, exclusive PSVR content. So people get angry and MS gets more sales.

B - Sony focus on a 500 bucks PS4K and doesn't release a PS4 slim or at least cuts cost on the unit and keeps it at, at least 300 bucks. MS releases a 200 bucks X1 slim and people start buying it because low pricepoint >>>> better graphics (proof: PS2, Wii).

Devs will just release the one version for PS4 and say well it runs on PS4.5 so that is fine. Only a few real big games and Son'y 1st party will bother full upgrading games to the PS4.5 specs.

+1.

Please stop with these joke predictions.

I just want to take a second to point out something:

There are people in this thread that have probably never programmed a line in their life, much less developed a video game of any sorts thinking they know better than console video game industry veterans regarding what it takes to make a video game, and how much work it will be to support a PS4.5.

You'd think people would listen to actual experts.

I Don't think that a Price drop is enought for Microsoft, to achieve that, they already are 50US$ Cheaper, and are loosing by a lot, if PS4K, is 40000US$, there will still be the original PS4, for 350US$, and how Microsoft, can close a gap of more than 20 Millions of units ?,  the Generation don't have enought time for Microsoft, to make a Comeback.

Oh, dear. What an embarrassingly awful article. So many things wrong that it's not even worth the effort.

Wait, is that a parody news site?

Think so.  Has to be.  I hope.

Not really the ps4 neo, ps4 and xbox 1 have all the same architecture. The PC is the complicated one here
