Forums - Sony Discussion - Will There Be A PlayStation 5? Sony Is Unsure: 'It's An If'

I thought they were skipping straight to Playstation 6.5? :)

Or you will spin it after it doesn't happen. "Well it didn't happen with NX but it will definitely happen with the next console. You just wait". Calling it now.

What are you talking about?

If this is true, Nintendo has to be drooling at the thought of having the entire physical console market to themselves once more. The amount of people willing to stream 100% of their video games is so small that there would by a mass exodus from the PS brand if they went streaming only.

lol. saying there may not be a PS5 doesn't mean it's gonna be streaming.

Over the next 15 years we can see 5 PlayStation "4" revisions. each one being significantly more powerful than the previous one. But as I have said before, just probably never gonna see a console that is so far ahead that software made for it simply can't run on any previous hardware.

Think of it this way, by the time FF18 comes along, you will probably still be able to play it on the same PS4 we have today but at 720p@30fps with all presets set to low. But you could have also bought the latest iteration of a PlayStation console around that time and be able to play the same game on there but at 4k@60fps.

That console doesn't have to be called PlayStation 5.

When Sony officially announces the Playstation neo.... if it's just called "PlayStation" then everything I am suspecting to happen would pretty much be confirmed.

The fact that Sony, Microsoft or any other company can be so ignorant and brazen as to think they can just fuck with standard console cycles is proof enough that they're going to fail. Console gaming is not the smartphone industry. The Wii-U was Nintendo's example of this. They thought ignorantly "people love tablets, lets put a tablet in our controler=win". That is exactly the same thing as thinking "people spend 200-300 dollars every year or two on smart phone upgrades. Let's release a console upgrade every 2-3 years=win". It's foolish.

As soon as they start releasing upgraded consoles 2-3 years apart, it's game over for all of us. The fact that I can spot this so plainly this far off is ridiuclous because it means that the guys who are in charge, shouldn't be.

I can still remember the mighty fall of Sega... and this is all looking very similar.

What are you talking about?

You are drawing comparisons with examples that aren't even in the same ball park.

What in God's name has arrogance got to do with any of this?

But let me understand something. Say you have a PS4 and 3 years later a PS4.5 is released that supports 4k output and has stuff that can make games look a little better than the PS4 that you have. And by better I mean where your console only managed 900p the new one does 1080p. Where your console managed 2xAA the new one does 4xAA. Where your console averages 25-30fps the new one averages 30fps locked. Where it take you 15secs to load a level the new one takes 7secs.

How is that "game over" for all of us. How is this a bad thing? So the problem here isn't that the console you bought 3yrs ago is running a game at 1080p@30fps. but that the new one can output the exact same game at 4k@30fps to a 4k TV that you don't even have? (not saying u domt have a 4k TV but you get my point)

I could see them just dropping the number and just proceed with calling it PlayStation.

The name actually would work great with a service as well as it does with a hardware.

PlayStation, sounds fitting for both fronts.

Agreed.

I have the PSVR bundle on pre order. I was barely justifying the $499 cost because it was going to be the OPTIMAL console VR experience. Now I find out that I will get the second string console experience because I have no plans to upgrade to a PS4K. $499 for a lesser experience is too expensive for me.

If Nintendo knocks my socks off at E3 I will probably cancel the PSVR and pre order the NX.

It is/will be the exact same "experience" that you wanted before.  This is like saying:
"I really liked this restaurant.  But now a fancier restaurant is next door (which I can't afford), so I won't go to my favorite restaurant anymore." (although nothing changed there)
As if you don't actually compare about the experience itself at all, but only the "ranking" of that experience, that you aren't "below somebody/thing else".
Why not just wear a Burger King crown and call yourself King of Master Race?  Nobody will dispute your position.

Remember I'm not arguing, it's always fun to talk to other gamers.

When playing VR games there is a thing called SIMULATION SICKNESS. It is cumulative, and builds up over time. The faster frame rate of the PSVR NEO game means you will be able to stay immersed longer that the slower frame rate OG PS4 version. The standard PSVR will make you sick faster. It's a fact.

Also King of Burgers I'm not. I'm more of a hamburgler.

On topic now: The PS 5 will not exist. Now that everyone has gone X86 we will see an end to standard console generations. Except for Nintendo, they are an anachronism and that's why I love them.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

So if I start a thread saying "there will be no PS5" and link to this story, will that be ok?

Its how it works here right?

OT

Who didn't see this coming? If not next gen, the gen after. Gaming will be a service. How many times do we have to say it. The fixed console generations are dumb from a business perspective. Utterly dumb.

I agree. Services have been the way to go since Steam released. The profitable margins having a service is completely superior to having to spend $$$billions in RnD and paying off the investment years later. Hardware only makes Sony, Nintendo and Xbox spend more of there budget on designing the next system instead of designing us more amazing games.

Iv been saying this for years. The first to replicate Steam is going to have the most success in the future.

No one has given a single reason as to why there won't be a PS5. Shuhei Yoshida just doesn't want to be the one to announce it.

This doesn't make sense - Steam is a store. Sony should stop making consoles and only have a store? What?
