Wii arrived in 2006, Wii U in 2012. It's about right. Most generations are 5-6 years. Unlike NEO, NX is confirmed to be a totally new concept so it's 9th, final answer. |
Atari 2600→Atari 5200→Atari 7800. Atari 2600 = 2nd generation, so Atari 7800 = 4th generation confirmed! The 7800 competed directly with the SNES and Genesis.
Like I said, it's not as simple as an "NES = 3rd gen, ... Wii U = 8th gen, NX = 9th gen" progression. It has to be viewed in a greater context than "It was released 4 years after the Wii U."

In additon to this, we don't know the capabilites of NX so in terms of the console as a machine, we still don't know if it'll be 9th gen or not. We know literally nothing about it. The fact that we know nothing about it only allows us to speculate if it'll be 9th gen. You just can't change to rules to play your game. Using Atari is a cheap shot. They didn't know what the heck they were doing and that's why they failed as early as they did. The 2600 usually represents the entire Atari generation. When people talk about Atari, they are usually referring to the 2600. Not the wack job Atari 2700 (yes it did exist), or 54 or any other multiple or 26. If Sony and MS come out with new consoles it'll be 9th gen because they are new consoles the same way NX is a totally new console. NX will most likely be around when PS5 or XB2 is around.
That being said, who says Nintendo has to follow the progression of game generations anyhow? I mean, it's traditional to do so. It's nice. But I don't see Nintendo following the same things they've done with themselves in the past. They're not afraid to diverge from the norm. It may bite them in the butt but I think they realize the importance of creating new experiences over sticking it out until everyone else is in talks about a successor.
