Forums - Sports Discussion - Conor McGregor to Retire.

Just announced on Twitter...

What you think?

Never heard of him. But retiring at 27? Well, he's certainly lucky.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Isn't he a little too young?. Maybe he just doesn't want any more losses in his record.

He said before that he would retire at 32 once he had 20M in the bank..... he is 27 and probably has close to that!

There is a lot more to this than you think.

He refused to travel to America to do a press conference and DANA pulled him from the card. He then ups the stakes by threatening to retire.

Why would they have a dispute? Money of course. Conor pulls in the numbers and probably wanted a certain amount for him (likely 10m+) and maybe Diaz was demanding a big cut he didn't want to give.

Either way it sucks and I've no interest in UFC 200 now.

So random, last time I checked he got beaten pretty badly but I don't think that's the reason he is retiring, or is it?

He always said he would retire young. He doesn't want to risk long term injury. Also i'm sure watching Charlie Ward, his teammate, put a beating on Joao Carvalho, then later die in the hospital from brain injury had some factor in that.

Or he could just be trolling.

Probably not.  I mean, that was a fight he probably should not have taken.  The two guys normally fight at different weights.  It doesn't hurt McGregor all that much professionally when he jumps up in weight on short notice and loses.  Plus, he made one million dollars from that match and turned his opponent's face bloody before he lost by submission.

I think it's either that he's questioning the risks he's taking after watching someone die from injuries taken during an MMA fight or that he's trying to angle for more money and leverage in the UFC.  With regards to the first, he's already worth millions and has no actual need to ever work again.

He made 1 million in disclosed payments.  That doesn't include his cut from the PPV which was the biggest ever for the UFC thanks to him.

His cut from the PPV alone would have been between 10-15m. Then his sponsorship money per fight is huge.

BTW his tweet was the most retweeted in 2016 of all sports people.  it's already beaten kobe Bryants retirement tweet.  Mcgregor is bigger than ever.

The consensus on Sherdog.com is that McGregor is injured, and that he will unrefined once he gets healthy and heals up
