Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Becoming The Perfect JRPG Machine

Well that depends on who you're comparing it against. Only against other 8th gen consoles? Yeah, fair enough. But if you're saying perfect JRPG machine as in better than any/all others and hence comparing it against PS1/PS2 as well then yeah these games really need to prove their quality for such a comparison.

Come on have you even played a lot of the jrpgs on PS2? espacially the earlier ones? Games like Orphan, Eternal Ring, Breath of Fire 5 and this one Frontier Saga game are forgotten for a reason.

JRPGs were never better before since the PS1 era

Well compare the PS2 JRPG's released the first 2,5 years compared to the PS4's one.

The best rated JRPG's include all ports like FFXIV/FFX/FFX-2.   Two and a half years in the PS2generation you had some pretty good games like Dark Cloud/FFX/kingdom Hearts, what does PS4 have at this moment?  It only has a quantity of games for people love list wars.  Reminds me of this thread: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=215741&page=1#      People just want to collect those games but not based on their quality.

Interesting, but for me the ps4 wins here.

Why? Based on what?

yeah and neither is it close to the PS2, but we gotta consider that those consoes were arround for 10 years or more, and if the PS4 keeps the pace up i can see it catching up to those two in about the same time.

I doubt it'll catch up to the PS1

Not in terms of quality at least.

and they are? I feel like I'm being lenient in granting God Wars and Black Rose Valkyrie (which actually looks really good).

Atelier, Persona, Fairy Fencer, SAO... BRV is from a studio that screws good stuff, but the Fujishima designs and gameplay screenshots might represent better devs at work there...

So, you're trying to say that Persona and Atelier Sophie are going to be bad games? I mean, I can see people who may have never played Atelier not being interested, but downplaying a mainline Persona? That's new.

Everyone is arguing which console is the JRPG king, and I'm just here playing my DS (aslo, doesn't the PSP have some JRPG recognizement too? It had Jeane D'Arc and Persona 1-3!). XD

The PS4 still has to catch the PS2 and PS1 in terms of JRPGs, which is going to be difficult seeing that that genre doesn't have the same pull as it did in the past. In terms of RPGs (both eastern and western) is going to be the winner, but I'm not sure about JRPGs alone.

PSP had more than that! But yeah, the DS and PSP had an incredible quantity of JRPGs in its time. Had a great time of great hardware sales before the market transitioned to smartphones.

Psp and ds were awesome consoles for jrpg.

3ds is not really good for jrpg, if we look the ds games, but the vita is not bad actually, even if we miss... a tactics ogre.

Persona was never that interesting to me and it plunged further after P3... The social element is one of the things I have gripes with most, hence why recent installments had nothing that interested me...

Of course, that doesn't means I am one with a penchant for empty criticism. I liked the Atelier series before Gust was a subsidiary. I enjoyed SMT's characters as well... I just feel they are trying to turn the games into VNs and thinking a JRPG story can fill in for a real VN story.

...

Makes Sony's ban on VNs in America worse... I always thought we'd been sold short there...

Idea Factory being the king of hypocritical devs only worsens things. The good thing is that there are devs like Falcom out there that are actually doing a great service to JRPGs by perfecting a well and tried formula or trying completely novel approaches like the Tales and FF games...

If you mean with "Rated" rated by Metacritic then thats not a valued argument, because Metacritic didnt exist during the same PS2 timeframe to compare both generations.

Metacritic is also heavily biased again japanese games, japanese review sites like 4gamer and famitsu arent allowed in the summary.
