Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Can The Legend of Zelda: (U/NX) Sell Close to 10mil Lifetime? (or More)

Not when MM remake did 500k and OoT did i think at least 600k on 3ds. Imagine a real 3d zelda on hh. A new onee

I still don't see it. I imagine a max of 5 Million in the U.S, 4 Million in Europe+others, and 1 Million in Japan. So, while its possible, I just don't see it. It would have to meet or exceed all my max expectations. Again, that's possible tho

For reference purposes-

Even Twilight Princess, released on both GameCube and Wii, did not hit 10 million unit sales.

Assuming an NX version of "Zelda U" then the Wii U version will likely sell considerably less than other first party titles already released.

But what if nx is portable. This is something that can throw a wrench into normal logic.  :p

I mean in japan, if zelda u were portable....... The game could potentially do 1.5mil, maybe more?

Though realistically yes 10mil seems impossible xD

Maybe, I just don't see it happening.

I mean Twilight Princess sold 58,000 first week compared to Wind Waker's 152,000. (a little under a third), then Wind Waker was bundled with Wii U's for a while boosting its sales (even before bundling Wind Waker boosted Wii U sales 31% in its opening week) while Twilight Princess dropped 91% (if I remember correctly, I could be off but needless to say dropped off a cliff), and will not be bundled with consoles.

http://www.zeldainformer.com/news/twilight-princess-hd-sells-52000-copies-in-its-opening-week

Even games with the longest legs don't typically outsell its opening week, and typically continue on a decline as far as sales week per week (I know some weeks games may sell higher than the weeks prior, but not the norm consecutively). The only saving grace is literally if they announce some ACTUAL content locked behind the wolf Link amiibo, and then prepare for the internet to burn.

That TPHD number is for Japan while that WWHD number is for NA.

As someone who has lived through the leadup to every 3D Zelda game, I can't remember there ever being less hype for one than there is for Zelda U right now. After nearly a year and a half of radio silence, it's not even on the radar for those who aren't hardcore Nintendo fans.

Most gamers simply don't care, they're too busy salivating for games like Uncharted 4 or Final Fantasy XV. Hell, even Horizon Zero Dawn seems to have more hype behind it, and that's a new IP. Let that sink in for a moment; a game from a completely unproven franchise is getting more hype than a series that's been running for 30 years and includes some of the most revered games in history. That speaks volume about how dreadful Nintendo's handling of Zelda U is.

We are presumably 7 months out from the release of a new main line Zelda. On this date a decade ago, we were 7 months out from the release of Twilight Princess, and the hype was through the roof. Now, the hype train for Zelda U has ground to a halt because it's run out of coal and the railway service is too stingy to resupply it, and its prospective passengers are giving up on it and taking the bus instead.

are we again 1 april ??

You are jumping to some wild conclusions there buddy.

@bold: Do you know what is different between Zelda U & Uncharted 4, Final Fantasy XV, Horizon? We know and have seen very little of Zelda while we know and have seen alot from the other games listed.

Its not a matter of people no longer being interested in Zelda, its just that people know next to nothing about it. Once Nintendo starts showing off and sharing details about the game, the hype will increase dramatically.

A big re-reveal at E3 followed up by a steady stream of continued details will get the game back into hype mode.

this is also the 3d Zelda that has the least told about it. Its weird, we know virtually nothing about the game and its supposed to be coming this year. Hell i think we at least knew the title of all the other Zeldas by this time.

No, he stated that "people simply dont care" and that "prospective passengers have given up on it".

There is a difference between a game not having much hype because not much is known about it & a game not having much hype because they dont care or have given up on it.

That's the problem though; Nintendo's radio silence regarding the game is preventing it from gaining any positive momentum.

Waiting til this E3 to loosen their lips is too little too late, they should have been progressively building hype for over a year prior to its release, like Sony did with UC4. It's been nearly two years since Zelda's reveal, and for most of that time, they've given us nothing. Modern gamers don't have the patience for a year and half of being blue balled, they lose interest.

And that's what's happened with Zelda; showing us nothing new of significance in 16 months has deflated people's interest in the game. Even if they start hyping it up in earnest from E3 onwards, they simply won't be able to build the kind of momentum they would have had if they'd been steadily building since its reveal.

Look at the kind of momentum that UC4 had 7 months out from its release; that's where Zelda U should be at by now.
