Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Speculation: Will Smash Bros NX and Mario Maker NX online need to interact with Wii U?

Amid rumors that Smash Bros and Mario Maker are being ported to the NX, will Nintendo have to tread carefully and allow Wii U owners to interact with the NX users online? I say this because these games are not very old. In fact, if the NX launches this year with Smash Bros and Mario Maker in 2016, both games will be two years old or less! Not every Wii U owner is going to buy the NX at launch. And for games like Mario Maker where the whole game relies on the online community, NX owners will have very little at the start while the Wii U community will sharply decline. Because of this, I think Nintendo needs to let both of these games connect with each other in some way until the NX has a considerable userbase where supporting both is too excessive. However this will take at least two to three years. And that is if the NX is able to sell much better than the past three Nintendo consoles (excluding the Wii)!

What are you thoughts? If these two games are ported, should Nintendo allow the Wii U and NX online community to interact with each other?

Yes.

Smash probably not necessarily, but Super Mario Maker would make a lot of sense..

If Splatoon NX is also a thing, would like it to have cross play as well, but I'm doubtful that would be the case

Smm needs to. Ssb doesnt. Especially if they go all out with ssb. Add new characters, 3ds stages, etc

True but I think that may be the only case as well. If Smash NX is just a prettier version of Wii U then fans will be hard pressed to buy another whole system for another quick release when the lastest three installments have an average 6 year gap.

The heart of Mario Maker is its user created content, so it'd be a huge waste of Wii U levels weren't playable on NX, and vice versa.

With Smash Bros, I think it would be preferable if NX people could play with WIi U people and download their levels, but also far less critical to the experience.

Yeah, why not?

No harm in a bigger online user-base. It isn't "needed" though.

At the very least Mario Maker should, not sure about the other two but most likely they won't.

Smash doesn't really need it. At least not as much as Super Mario Maker. Seriously, there are already millions of levels built for SMM. If you couldn't play the levels that are already made, then what's even the point of having that port in the first place?

bet: lost

Yes, particularly for Smash. Otherwise Smash for Wii U would be completely worthless as everyone would just play the NX version online.
