Forums - Gaming Discussion - Bundling games downplay

Okay, let's to bundling.

I see this argument pop up all the time, users get on the defence and say "it was mass bundled" blah blah blah. Yeah mass bundling does add sales but don't take that away from the game. When i go to my video store there are usually 3 to 4 bundles to choose from and some even let you pick from a pool of selected games. That in it's is a decision the customer has to make about which games they want with their bundle as the prices are usually very similar.

The other thing to take into consideration is what if they wanted the game but didn't own the console? We will probably see a FF15 bundle and i bet alot of Final Fantasy fans still haven't picked up a current gen console so it makes sense to buy them at the same time.

What are your thoughts on this?

it depends on how it is bundled. It hasn't always been a choice especially in the past. A game like wii sports was actually selling the wii to many people, rather than the other way around. A game like viva pinata was bundled and most people probably wouldn't have bought it without the bundle. Then there are games like splatoon where some of the people would have bought it anyways and some wouldn't. It's not a black and white issue.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Duck Hunt wasn't quite as popular as the numbers suggest.

Same with Wii Sports. The Wii U version tanked.

Every bigger game has a launch bundle and that's okay. Those are typically quite limited and won't matter when you compare games.

But then you also have special bundles like Wii Sports, Kinect Adventures, the yearly 360 holiday bundles with two games, I also remember the PS3 starter bundle in Europe etc.

Those can add several million to a game when they are the only bundles available at that time.

GT5
Halo 3
Motorstorn
NSMBWii
Resistance
Pure (360)
Etc. All sold 1m or more due to bundling. For some it might be not as relevant (GT5, Halo 3, NSMBWii) for others though...

I think that has more to do with the not so good sales of the system it launched on.

Wii sports was the IT!!!!!!

Obviously it didn't carry on since motion controls got less demand...... Hence the Kinectbom XONE.

Pocky Lover Boy!

It depends on how many of the sales came from bundles. If the game sells decently but only decently, there's a good chance it did as well as it did mostly because of the bundle. Even people originally not interested in a game might end up buying it if it looks even half-interesting, because it'll be good value in a bundle. Of course if a game sells a lot, the bundle probably didn't have much effect on its sales (with the possible exception of the effect of a holiday season).
