Should pharmaceuticals be available to anyone?

Forums - General Discussion - Should pharmaceuticals be available to anyone?

That's not a good idea, people already feel like then can go buy anything without seeing a doctor first giving them full access would make it worse.

Are you fucking serious?

I take it you haven't heard of super strain bacteria? People already take antibiotics for infections that they could naturally heal already, and its causing them to evolve immunity.

No. Overuse of antibiotics is dangerous; it breeds resistant super-bacteria like MRSA.

Too many idiots already take antibiotics for the common cold or the flu.

The problem is shortage of doctors. My wife developed pneumonia March 15th or so, it took more than 2 weeks to see her own doctor. Before that we sat in the ER waiting room for 3 hours for a 30 second evaluation to end up with the usual antibiotics, they didn't do anything for having trouble with breathing.
She still has problems with a heavy chest feeling and has now finally got an appointment for a specialist May 20th.

Pharmacists could make that 30 second judgment too. It's always the same, try antibiotics first, come back if it doesn't get better.

I hope your wife gets better soon.

No, people are idiots. Healthcare should be available to everyone so that doctors can diagnose them properly and prescribe the drugs. It's not even about abusing them but the loads of people that will kill themselves because they have no idea how to diagnose correctly or do not care which dose to take.

Then again, we might be a lot better off with stupid people killing themselves. Soooo... hell yeah strong prescription drugs should be available to anyone!

well supposedly, in other countries antibiotics are available over the counter.

I think such a move would probably save people a lot of time and money.

As others have stated that's a terrible idea. People take antibiotics for everything already and it's just speeding up the growth of virus'

Not to mention people would have no idea about dosages, or the side affects of mixing various pharmaceuticals together.

No. People may think what's wrong with them and how to fix it and sometimes they're right, but a lot of times people are also wrong. If you're wrong, it can be dangerous. And people also use medicine way too much, and this wouldn't change it for the better for sure.

Also this.

Freedom first, thus of course government should prohibit voluntary trade and decision making of free individuals.

Antibiotic resistance is already a big enough problem as it is. It should and needs to be regulated more, not less. Most people know jack about how the human body works and what's wrong with them. I study Biology in university, and I know that I know way too little to diagnose myself properly; I don't trust anyone else with no education on the matter to have the freedom of taking antibiotics whenever they want.
