Forums - Sony Discussion - I Think I Must Have This Rant Every Year (PSN Accounts and Moving Countries)

Why - oh why - can I not use a non-UK credit card on my UK account? Or why can I not change the region of my account to the country I am currently living in?

It's ridiculous, because I can't use vouchers from any region other than the UK, either. In addition, I don't have a UK-based credit card, only a UK-based debit card, which Sony has never allowed me to use on PSN account.

Son'y official answer to this problem is to create a new account in that region. Thus, losing my trophies (not that I have many), and my progress on any PSN-account based games - ie, all those with persistent multiplayer and even some nowadays on the campaigns.

What I end up doing is buying a UK-based voucher off of Amazon using my UK-based debit card (as you cannot use foreign cards to buy PSN vouchers on Amazon either). However, this is never a quick-and-easy process, for some unknown reason, the purchase always fails validation in the first automated transaction, and I have to wait several hours for it to be manually approved. I don't know whether that part is an issue on Sony, Amazon, or my bank, but it still pisses me off.

Even if I were to create another account here, I'd be losing it all AGAIN by next year, anyway, as I'll have moved to another country.

Migrating countries has become much more common for our generation. An international jobs marketplace means that you can always find better money overseas, decreased cost of travel and communication has made it an acceptable option. Why claim that your console is "region free" if you cannot use most of the features on it in another region without jumping through a huge number of hoops?

Yup. UK account here and living in Japan. Super annoying. I opened a thread about this a few years ago and nothing has changed.

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

Clearly the solution is to never move

Ummm...I'm in Romania. My debit card is Romanian. I have a UK account. Been using them together just fine for a few years now. Had some trouble with the card from another bank - which I'm still unable to use with my UK account -.

My GF's debit card won't allow me to make payments on PSN, but has no trouble with PayPal or Amazon.

Sooo...you may want to check on that.

Also, I believe you could simply use PayPal to circumvent all these problems. Never tried myself, but I remember the option being there.

I have always thought this is stupid.

I had this happen on the 360 just from linking an email that was created in another country. The whole damn console changed languages and regions.

MS support told me the same nonsense. Delete account and start over losing everything included purchased content or deal with it and for my troubles they'd give me a $10 credit.

Edit:  I didn't even move.  I just changed the email and it happened to me.

l <---- Do you mean this glitch Gribble?  If not, I'll keep looking.

Dude there is no reason to switch your account, because PS3 and PS4 support having multiple accounts and both consoles are region free. You can share Digital Games, Physical Games, DLC on all accounts as well as the PS+ online multiplayer. Your current console in the US has to be the primary console on each account.

Basicley you can keep your UK account as the main account and make a second US account where you will download all your games and DLC from now one. Just make sure that the DLC is puchased from the region the game is originated. You cant for example download US DLC for a UK game, doesnt matter if its digital or physical.

The only problem is you have to decide where you want to have your PS+ from now on, if you stick with your UK PS+ you can keep your old PS+ library but it could end up being more expensive as you would pay in UK pounds in your new home.
US PS+ would be a lot cheaper but you couldnt use features like the cloud save feature on your UK account.

Multiplayer will work on any account if the console has an account with a PS+ subsciption.

You can buy PSN voucher codes from various websites, no credit card needed

If you're right about that, you've saved me tonnes of frustration in the future. Cheers.

It's because people would abuse the system to circumvent different tax rates per country. Of course people still manage to get around this while people that actually move are disadvantaged.

I used to live in Europe and had an Amazon US account, when Amazon came to Europe and I switched to Amazon UK. Later I moved to Canada and now use Amazon Canada. I never had trouble paying with credit card yet after all this shuffle Kindle books are firmly off limits to me, I always get unavailable in your country and am not allowed to buy from US Amazon. Whatever, I prefer physical anyway.

Pretty sure there are plenty of sites you can buy a psn card from using paypal or a card that is not from the uk. Been doing this for years and never had an issue.

cdkeys has been my favourite. Also, shopto if I'm not mistaken. It takes about 1 minute to do it, so I don't see the problem.
