Forums - General Discussion - What math have you learned?

The highest level I took was ap calculus in high school, that combined with high sat and act math scores I never had to take a math class in college. Well, unless you count logic, which is fucking evil, at least in my college because the prof was an ultra-prick. He had some sort of vendetta against grade inflation and so graded everything so harshly and assigned so much work that the class was nigh impossible to pass. Over the years over two-thirds of students that took logic under him failed and of the roughly third of people that did pass less than 5% received an A.

Out of curiosity, what math classes have you taken?

"High School Algebra", "Calculus I", "Calculus II", etc:

-What classes have you taken?

-Which were the most interesting?  The least?

-What were the best books you used?

-What classes are you planning on taking?

I've gone all the way up to PhD, specifically in calculus and its applications in physics. I can't really comment specifically on things like "the best books", but I'm always hearing great things about a Calculus book by Anton.

I've studied passed calculus in College and took some of the higher math past that which is just specialized in most cases easier then calc. One in particular just dealt with Venn diagrams and relationship of data in decision-making.

Yeah I guess I just have a harder tme remembering some of the material but I tend to learn better when I have an understanding of the bigger picture rather than the "what we have to accomplish right now". Also I'm just a slower paced learner in general and I struggle when I have so many different things to learn at once. Also I'm not saying we should spend a huge amount of time refreshing ourselves on every single little detail on the past material, but we should have SOME time to remind ourselves of the general world of mathamatics we are treading in. Also sorry if I seemed a little ranty lol. I'm just passionate in our education system and it frustrates me in how much some of our political leaders and teachers do not care about what we learn, and we end up suffering directly as a result of it.

Well if you wanted to learn the "bigger picture" that pretty much requires you to major in mathematics ...

Higher education is all about self motivation so I guess professors expect their students to handle reviews themselves plus there's always the option of community colleges where you can go at a slower pace too if one chooses to ...

Yeah I'm not majoring in math lol. I guess I mean that on a basic level not a super complex one. But yeah once I get into college I'll probably become more motivated to ask my professors on material and stay after class and all that jazz. I plan on a 4 year degree instead of a community college, and I also want to be a software engineer (hopefully to make video games! But we will see ;) ) so I'm gonna end up taking a lot of math classes whether I like it or not.

I did my PhD in math, so I've taken quite a few courses (feel free to ask more details if you're curious). My research area was analytic number theory, but I also enjoyed upper-level classes in extremal combinatorics, graph theory, complexity theory, operator theory, and measure theory/probability, My least favourite courses were undergraduate statistics and differential equations (but that gets much more interesting/theoretical in grad school).

I'm not American so for what you call high school first two years we have either O level or Matriculation and last 2 we have A level or F.sc. I'm about to finish with my A level will give final exams in may. So we have fixed curririculum with little choice. We have Pure Maths 1,2 and 3 stats 1 and 2 and mechanics 1 and 2. Our choices are either P1 and M1 for first year and p3 and m2 for second or p1 s1 and p3 and s2 or p1 m1 and p3 s1. You can take p1 p2 but that counts as a one year course. I've taken p1 m1 p3 s1. So in pure maths we have Binomial Expansion complex numbers vectors in 2d and 3d integration differentiation differential equations trigonometry solving equations numerically a little bit of mensruation partial fractions etc. In m1 we have kinematics and dynamics with integration and differentiation. In s1 we have probability permutations combinations mean standard deviation variance expectation normal distribution and that other distribution I can't remember the name of

Just a guy who doesn't want to be bored. Also

well, i've been out of high school for 21 years now. If i remember correctly, i think i did up through Geometry.

Always seems strange when I see maths called math. Just makes me cringe.

To answer your question I went as far as A-Level maths. I also did statistics to GCSE level

Well, apparently in some countries the correct plural is math, and in others, it is maths. Google it. I've always known the plural as math, personally.

i never said it was wrong. Seems right really. Math, Science, English. I just never heard anyone in real life say Math. Its always Matchs. Like

I'm going to Maths class. Or like "are you doing Maths today".
