Nintendo's answer to Xbox Live Arcade, WiiWare (Wii Software to us in Europe) has launched in Japan with nine games.

The game download service (which is apparently locked in a "secret war" with Microsoft's service) is set to appear in North America on May 12, but there's still no word from Nintendo Europe on when the rest of us can expect it.

Games range from 500 to 1500 points (£3.50 - £10), the best of the Japanese bunch including Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (predictably the most expensive), Star Soldier R and Pokémon Ranch.

We're looking forward to getting our hands on Star Soldier (especially after a recent outburst of retro gaming in the office), but we're hoping for a more erm, Western European release list. Lost Winds needs to be there, for a start.

The full list of launch games is as follows:

  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (1500 Wii Points)
  • Lonpos (1000 Wii Points)
  • Okiraku Ping Pong (500 Wii Points)
  • Kotoba no Puzzle Mojipittan (1000 Wii Points)
  • Dr. Mario (1000 Wii Points)
  • Saku Saku Animal Panic (1000 Wii Points)
  • Star Solider R (800 Wii Points)
  • Tenshi Solitaire (500 Wii Points)
  • Pokémon Ranch (1000 Wii Points)
