Forums - Nintendo Discussion - NX Developer Gives leaks info.

So a guy creating an RPG for the NX allowed peopel on reddit to ask question about the console and here are some of his replies.

I'm not going to get too specific, I hope that is understandable. That said:

  • It is more powerful than the PS4 by any sensible metric. Overall, it is at least slightly more powerful
  • 12GB on ours. A substantial portion may not be available to games (we can only go as high as 6GB right now)
  • 1TB embedded HDD, pretty sure this is not the case for the consumer version, though
  • I'll tell you it's not x86 (but you can probably guess what it is)

Connectivity with mobile devices seems to be the goal.

Our devkit uses discs. At least one controller has a screen, albeit there are at least two separate kinds of controllers. More powerful than a PS4, but these things are naturally hard to quantify, there are so many things to keep track of. I will say, there is no single metric where the console is weaker than the PS4. At worst it matches it. Development is extremely easy, no obvious bottlenecks on the hardware. Our game is a port.

There are scrolling shoulder buttons. They are the L and R buttons. They depress too. We are using them for weapon and spell switching (though we are programming remapping for controls, too). The scroll buttons are my favorite part of the controller, to be honest, they are a sensible and practical evolution for controllers. We're just using the screen for inventory and maps. Nothing special. We might do Remote Play on the controller, but we are waiting on Nintendo for guidelines on that, I believe.

I know nothing about the handheld- if it exists, we weren't shown it. I know there is at least one extension port on the devkit, I don't know what that is for. There is no 'new way to play,' that's just marketing speak. It's a fairly traditional console with some sensible evolutions. From what I can gather about targeted specifications for the retail release, I think Nintendo may have some AR gimmicks, but they are definitely not the central point of the console to the best of my knowledge.

The rumble is localized, so it can be divided into two or more separate rumble locations.

I couldn't tell you anything about what games Nintendo has planned.I know they had a meeting with the upper management, and I think that their own lineup was discussed in that meeting, but the most I hear is that Nintendo will have 'a good lineup.' Which, I mean, that goes without saying, right? The online is definitely far better this time around. In general, it seems like we can 'plug in' (so to speak) loads of online features into our games without having to worrying about whether the backend even supports them, that we never could on Nintendo systems before. There's not much online functionality in our game, but even basic features that were missing before are present here.

No clue about battery life, it is hardwired. It's 1080p. It has physical buttons. The screen is rectangular.

  • The touch screen is capacitive. Very high quality, in my experience.
  • I think this version of the game is definitive, at least on consoles. It looks the best, performs the best, and has extra content included.
  • We're pretty excited about it. We have never worked on a Nintendo system before (by which I mean specifically my team), and we are pleasantly surprised
  • I do not wish to speak of the name
  • It is a powerful, flexible traditional console, with very minor gimmicks that don't get in the way. Very unlike Nintendo, at least the Nintendo of the last 15 years.

Nintendo Disc, yes. 25GB, but we can install the game on to the on board storage, so really, the disc is immaterial, except as an installer pack.

It's not x86, while the other consoles are. So there's a bit of an adjustment period, though it's nothing too major. The other thing is that we have a lot of RAM in the devkit... but we can't use about half of it. Which isn't difficult (the portion we can use is still more than on other consoles) but it is frustrating.

There will be a new Nintendo console out this year. As of right now, we have a launch window for December, and I am pretty sure we are aiming to be a launch game.

It's not x86, so porting is probably going to be difficult. Development seems to be very easy, no obvious bottlenecks. The game will be a physical release.

The standard one looks like a Wii U Pro, but the triggers are digital, and the bumpers are scroll wheels. The touch screen one is a bit harder to describe- imagine, like, a Wii U Pro, but stretched, and with a small screen embedded in the middle. EDIT Triggers are analog, not digital.

It doesn't seem to be as expensive as the Wii U Pad was, so I can see it feasibly being sold for, say, $99 as a high end controller. Like the XB1E, I suppose. I know that Nintendo is planning Remote Play for it (but we don't have the guidelines for that yet). It has a capacitive touchscreen, so I see no reason why it could not be used for navigation of the UI in the OS and even the games. It could easily definitely work as the standard controller- my thinking is Nintendo will have two SKUs, one with the screen less controller, one with the one with the screen.

NOTE This post is only my speculation, except for the capacitive screen/navigation part

Nintendo plans a Q2 reveal of the console, that is honestly all I know (we've been told to have a trailer and demo build ready, to be deployed at short notice any time starting April)

The OS seems to be fully accessible while the game is running. I can confirm that multitasking is a thing. The devkit can interact with Android and iOS tablets and phones, as well as PCs and Macs (I specifically tested for a Mac). From what I have been able to gather- and this part is strictly speculation- I think that the console will be able to construct a full profile for you by having you just pair up with a smartphone or tablet or PC, without you having to set one up.

You can do this with games, although obviously, you need to have the other device programmed to be able to communicate with the console. In simple terms, games with smartphone apps will be able to instantly connect with their apps on phones or tablets, without nonsensical logins and pairings and synchronizations, and what not.

The one thing that really intrigues me is the ability of the console to pair up with smart devices. It is, I think, a legitimately forward thinking move from Nintendo for a connected world. Not something I would have expected of them. The EXT port also interests me, but Nintendo will strictly not talk about that at all.

It's an HDMI 2.0a port (at least on the devkit), so yes, 4K resolutions are theoretically possible.

I haven't heard anything about the handheld, but I do know that there is one planned. If the handheld exists, it is not coming out for a while, now.

Yes, you can 'name' the console. My understanding is that the name even varies based on which user is signed in. Nintendo is being very supportive- I believe our game will be showcased at the reveal. Hmm. I'd say the footprint is very big (bigger than a PS4). Maybe make it smaller?

  1. It is not a true hybrid. Looking into it, a lot of Geno's information seems to be false. As for whether or not this will be a flop- I can't predict that. I think it should do well. It is a well designed, good console, powerful, and Nintendo's third party outreach seems to be better this time around. I guess as long as Nintendo markets it well, it should do better than Wii U or Gamecube.

  2. Sorry, but trust me, I have very good reasons for not sharing the name!

$250 seems unlikely- $300 maybe more likely, and it would be a good move against the PS4 too.

We've been developing since, October, I think? The first couple of months were on a software kit, though. Haven't tried smartwatch synching yet! Right now the icons look unfinished haha.

Interactive achievements are a thing. They're not EXACTLY like achievements, they're more like challenges (or 'missions'), but we're implementing them like achievements.

I have no clue what the home unit may look like. The devkit is just a big box with lots of ports. Bigger footprint than PS4.

Is it backward compatible with the Wii U and or Wii?

I copied and pasted his answers to the questions

A third party developer on a Nintendo console? Fake!

The only thing about this that got me excited is the fact (according to this) someone is making an RPG. I love RPGs on my system of choice. Sad the Wii U didn't get more.

25GB disc? Aren't PS4/X1 discs 50GB? If that's true and it if it also gets decent 3rd party support is there a good chance we could be seeing some multi disc games again?

Other than that it only properly covers 1 of the 4 things I'm interested in. That 1 being the relative lack of gimmicks.

25GB for regular BR discs and 50GB for dual layered.

He did mention something about installing the game on a board storage(whatever that means) so im not worried.

This is a very interesting read...

FAKE.

Gimmicks in nature arent bad, they just need to be well implemented and make sense(in general), not just for the sake of it.

But I dont know if this is true. The fact that he got wrong the first time(about the triggers) and had to edit seems strange, not to mention that he first says that there was no handheld part to the best of his knowledge, and then says that believes there is,and the fact that tomorrow(for some persons today) is 1st April raises some eyebrowns.Having said that, hope this is true.I also hope it has some Ar of some kind.Imagine how awesome it would be like to have a small holographic mario for example?

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

More NX info eh?

25GB sounds meh.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."
