Forums - PC Discussion - Windows 10 Defeats Steam Machines?

Everything defeats Steam Machines. Maybe even the Wii U

We just wanted a standarized PC so that developers had the opportunity to optimize their titles.

We got any of that.

Kind of looks like Steam Machines are dealing with a similar challenge to what the Windows 10 Store, and its universal applications, are currently facing. They're trying to compete with a far more established opponent, and yet their platform is actually in many ways notably inferior to said entrenched competitor, both in terms of library and how 'good' the underlying platform is. =P (Different reasons, though, as I believe the Windows Apps' shortcomings are more related to featureset and mod-friendliness than raw performance.)

The difference being that Microsoft has at least announced their intention to address the shortcomings in their storefront so it might better compete against Steam, however successful that ends up being. Whether Valve has any intention of trying to fix the issues in Steam Machines, let alone any success in doing so, will likely help determine how well they can ultimately compete.

Though personally, I think both sides have a pretty massive uphill fight ahead of them to win marketshare in their targeted fields. =P

No windows 10 has its own problems to worry about. Using it on a daily basis for work shows me how unpolished and buggy it is. Yesterday visual studio 2015 quit working, it took a whole day to restore access. And alot of the ms support was its maybe a Windows 10 issue you might have to end up reinstalling Windows like these other people. Or you can pay $280 to talk to our escalated support team. Oh and by the way the support ticket where dozens of people have reported the same problems has been closed as "non reproducible".

New user with 3 posts. All anti MS. Hmmm.

OT

Steam machines were a bad idea, badly implemented and badly received. Doomed from the day they were announced.

This is actually quite a funny story.

To me it shows that he has 236 posts and signed up in june 2015 :-3

As a huge fan of Steam and Valve, statistics show that Windows 10 PCs out preform Steam Machines by nearly half the frame rate in these tests.

That's a bit misleading. There was one game, and another one with one test, where what you said was true. The other tests weren't as bad for SteamOS, although even they're not looking too good for it either.

I like the concept of Steam machine.

Imagine if Linux became the OS for gaming and we wouldn't have to put of with MS bullshit anymore? That would be amazing.

I hope Valve keeps trying.

I would still keep Windows 10 for dual-boot

Lol! Of course! Windows 10 is free and Steam Machines costs hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Why was this comparison even made?

Especially with all the Xbox gamers now. They're all going to make the switch from Xbox to Windows 10. Why wouldn't they? Hell, the Xbox should really get renamed the Windows Box now.

Wow, that disparity is pretty huge.

Sadly, that isn't even the least appealing thing about SteamOS.

Steam machines are mini ATX builds though compared to actual full desktop case PC's, especially custom built ones.

With what is going on with Windows 10 I;d rather stick with Windows 7 and then jump over to Steam OS, I see my library being with Steam, Origin, GoG, Battle.net than with Windows 10.
