Forums - PC Discussion - Windows 10 Defeats Steam Machines?

As a huge fan of Steam and Valve, statistics show that Windows 10 PCs out preform Steam Machines by nearly half the frame rate in these tests.

If you’re looking at buying a Steam Machine then I would probably think twice. Steam + Windows is the ultimate companion for each other from the look of things.

With the inclusion of Windows 10 store offering some of the best next generation games plus Steam operating better then Valve’s own systems, did Microsoft just destroy the Steam machines?

If you own a Steam Machine what are your thoughts?

Steam machine's are horrible optimized. We've known this for a long time, and until they fix this issue, it won't come close to competing with Windows. In fact, its almost better to game on a Mac with similar specs than it is to game on a steam machine.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Games and drivers are optimized for DirectX, not surprising it runs worse in OpenGL and Linux.
Without exclusives or a real price advantage that won't change either.

Sad state of affairs....

SteamMachines was a flawed concept, it was going to flop anyways.
But this is just sad, same machines with windows 10 on them, run the same games but better.... yeah.

Beating Steam machines is like beating the Ouya.

Not surprising I always assumed steam machines would never go anywhere. It was just not a good idea at all.

The largest problem is the driver set. Nvidia has perfotmant Linux driver, but they are propriatary and have place on a linux system and AMD is still in the midst of making a better foss driver.

No windows 10 has its own problems to worry about. Using it on a daily basis for work shows me how unpolished and buggy it is. Yesterday visual studio 2015 quit working, it took a whole day to restore access. And alot of the ms support was its maybe a Windows 10 issue you might have to end up reinstalling Windows like these other people. Or you can pay $280 to talk to our escalated support team. Oh and by the way the support ticket where dozens of people have reported the same problems has been closed as "non reproducible".

I don't think stream machines ever had a chance. Valve should stick to software because they're clearly not cut out for Hardware.

I like the concept of Steam machine.

Imagine if Linux became the OS for gaming and we wouldn't have to put of with MS bullshit anymore? That would be amazing.

I hope Valve keeps trying.

I LOVE ICELAND!
