people yelled and screamed that ps4/xbox1 games were nothing more than last gen games with higher resolution and framerates and that made this gen not worth upgrading to.

people yelled and screamed for 2 years that developers need to stop supporting ps360 and release next-gen exclusives.

now the ps4k isn't even formally announced and it is already assumed the ps4 is obsolete.

i lol'd.

Now:

PS4/XB1 owners scream that Xbox 360/PS3 are holding gaming back.

PC owners scream that PS4/XB1 are holding gaming back.

Future:

PS4.5 owners scream that PS4/XB1 are holding gaming back.

PC owners scream that PS4.5 is holding gaming back.

So you understand what opportunity cost is?  *High* end pc gamers are such a small minority that is not worth the developer time to focus on, vs focusing on the majority unwilling to buy insanely expensive rigs.

Its console peasants like us that foot the dev costs for people like you.

We are trying to save some money to buy PSVR and now we have a new PS4.5. I cant really afford both. I will stick with my current PS4.

On a side note, Sony has been always one step ahead of Microsoft this generation. While MS was talking about the future of upgradable console, Sony was actually working on it and almost getting it ready for release.

Microsoft cant even take a breath.

Its my understanding that Sony is constantly iterating (annually or semi-annually) on builds in order to not get ps3ed again (1 year after Xbox 360).

If true:

Depending on what these 'full advantages' are, I might buy it.

I wonder if they'll make it slimmer or change the look of it as well.

I'm afraid to get it because they already gimp PC ports and don't use the full power of it. How do I know devs wont just do the same thing here? If I can sell my PS4 and use the difference so that I pay less then $200 then I might do it depending on what I get. Then again I might wait a little to see if the device fails and try and get it on sale or just not at all.

So...it's just better graphics? Same catalogue? Why would I? My PS4 does quite well on its own, thanks.

I don't disagree with this sentiment.

But for what seems the majority, the PS4 version of the multiplats being just "better graphics" is enough reason.  So, my guess is that if this is true, the graphics whores who count the pixels while running and gunning or racing will clearly need this upgrade.

It is near the end of the end....

I would say if you don't want to pay into new hardware at a short cycle, then don't. If Sony doesn't pull any shit, you should be able to play all your games on the current one anyway. It's no big deal. No need to keep up with the Joneses if the need to by new hardware is only optional.

When you exclude the Asia/Africa/South-America market and you do a average of the Europe/USA market, most people own a GTX 970/R9 390 which is 2.0 to 2.5X more powerful then the PS4.

If the PS4.5 releases, I don't think many developers would like to make exclusive games for it, since the mass will still be on the old PS4. It would only run the same games as on the normal PS4 but with higher resolution and framerates.

I'm not buying another fucking PS4, the one I have is very expensive already and they want me to buy another one? Fuck you Sony.

They don't want you to buy "another" one.

No one is holding a gun to your head.

Every game made will work on both skus just as always.

True but it won't look much better than it does. It'll just be 4K at best. Probably better processing speed. When you make something like this you're confining the product to a specific and limited market. People who will buy another PS4 for the sake of pixels and slightly enhanced processing power and those who are just okay with their current experience with PS4 that don't want to drop another 300-400 bucks on a slight upgrade. The latter will be much greater as long as the catalogue is the same.

3DS is huge. Not as big as DS but it's 60 Million units sold. The New 3DS came out to some fanfare but after a while it died down and only has a few games exclusive to it. But now the New 3DS is the model to buy while phasing out the older models. If they go with this "New PS4" idea. It should gradually phase out the older models because the newer one will be the one to buy just like the New 3DS is the console to buy for the 3DS family. I guess Sony is just trying to reach people who will pay for a premium experience because those people do exist. It's just going to be very limited unless the old PS4 is slowly phased out.
