Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Golden Bolt Reviews: Mega Man

I know it's been a little while since my last upload; House of Cards happened and then I had a few technical difficulties. But now we're back on track with Mega Man!

I chose Mega Man because I wanted to play some of the classic series again, but then I realized as I started recording I'd made a mistake. Thankfully the games get much better after the first one. I won't say much more because I don't wanna paraphrase what you're already gonna hear in the video!

Anyway, let me know what you guys think. It's a lot more technically sound now that I've nailed down some of the rookie mistakes.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

IMMEDIATE improvement already on the title card! Looking forward to the rest!

Sweet background of R&C.

I vote you do R&C next (instead of ending up hateing yourself)

I can't say they'll all be as quick as this one just yet but I'm enjoying both variants so far. It wouldn't end up more than five seconds longer in all likelihood, and that'd only be for cold open videos. I'm gonna keep tweaking it from here to see what people seem to agree on the most.

Good, that's the way people are leaning, thank God lol. And that poster is a personal favorite. I have no clue where I bought it though, now that I'm thinking about it.

Im currently watching your Sly Cooper video.

Man I love how you cut it out and explain the storyline & gameplay of the game, makes me want to play it (I havnt before).

(that part about the challenge being high, but your not punished for failing at all, sounds really good too)

*edit: btw  your production quality is on point, this is basically professional level reviewing.

Well thank you! I really appreciate that, it might be the nicest complement I've gotten so far!

If you have a PS2/3 give Sly a shot. It's a wonderful little gem, but from a review standpoint it can suffer a bit at times - as I'm sure you heard in the review. My opinion is more positive than the flaws may let on, if that helps any.

I would have explained why the boss fights seemed too easy to you. You do a pretty good job in explaining your reasons for your other technical gripes, but all you say about the bosses is that they "go down too easy," which doesn't really explain anything. Do they have really simple attack patterns? Does attacking them with their weakness take off too much health? To their attacks do very little damage? Do Meagan's power ups have too much ammo? Etc.

Also, you have a very clear voice with great dictation. Keep that up.

Honestly, I would invest in a body microphone if you are going to a "live" bit before and after (and during) the recorded bits. It seems like you're trying to sort of emulate Youtubers like TheCompletionist and, while I personally think it might do your channel better to do only voice stuff since I enjoy that part more way more, if you're going to do the live stuff, at least have the audio quality match up.

I would shorten the intro bits where you introduce the franchise. It's not really concise and gets a bit ramble-y. It's obviously fine and even beneficial to give a bit of background to a game you're reviewing for context. Just shorten it a lot. The key word is concise. A 12 minute concise review will always be better than a 20 minute bloated one.

This is personal preference, like really personal preference, but I wouldn't curse so much. Your arguments are presented well enough that you don't have to resort to that kind. It just makes the arguments feel cheaper to me. I wouldn't care if it was a review on a forum or something, but it's different when it's presented on an official Youtube channel like this.

I enjoyed the review, though! Much better! I think it would do you better to have the whole thing be a bit shorter, but that's my biggest overall complaint.

Yeah I never intended it to end up as long as it did. I wanted it to be around 10 minutes but then I decided I may as well stick with the history segment because people seemed to enjoy that so far. With a game like this, at least, I'll never have to do longer history segments, since when I do sequels most of it is covered. I may just segment them off separately so that it's clearer that it's meant to be its own thing. That's just an oversight though.

With the Masters, I thought I covered it in the fact that Rock beats Scissors and so on, because that's genuinely it. With the sequels I'll make a note of that in more detail because the powers actually get decent in 2 onward.

If you have any suggestions for body mics let me know because I thought about it but never looked much into it. I've got a buddy who works in the music industry so he might have an idea which mics would have better sound quality but he doesn't do clip-on mics for obvious reasons.

I don't personally know any brands but it shouldn't be too difficult to find one that is affordable.

Yeah, the bit about the masters wasn't really clear to me, but I might have just misunderstood.

I definitely think the history should stay. I just think it should be shorter.
