Forums - Sony Discussion - I think the PS4.5 wont run games at 4K but 3K

Actually, if you check Anandtech Bench, you mostly see 3x difference on the same card between 1080p and 2160p (it's much more obvious in nVidia cards, AMD GPUs tend to underperform in some of tests) - also, 390X tends to have somewhat lower framerate in 2160p then 7850 in 1080p, even with more then 3x TFLOPS (though not 3x MPixels/MTexels per second).

Consoles don't run their third-party games at Ultra settings. If you look at benchmark a R9 380 is pretty capable of native 4K locked 30FPS at Medium/High settings.

True, but not really relevant for this particular case - the point is that you usually need around 3x GPU for jump from 1080p to 2160p with the same settings, whatever those settings might be.

Considering PS4k should be a little stronger than the HD7970 a chip built on the same tech making it easy to develop for both PS4 and PS4K. I would expect 1440p to be the standard for most game. However, simple games like Disney Infinity, Lego Games, and most indies should run at 4K no problem.

I don't think we will see 4K on Naughty Dog Games, COD, and Madden tell PS4 Spec 3 in 2019 or 2020. PS4 Spec 2 and Spec 3 games will just be enhanced resolution and framerate version of the games we are getting right now. True next gen games won't happen tell PS5 hits in 2024.

Why would you think that? Even with 10nm in 2019 Sony will be able to have 8x PS4 GPU in PS5...if 7nm is mature before that, even more.

The amount of power needed to make a significant leap forward is just not going to be ready, or at mass market prices until then. For A PS5 to happen, Sony needs to have a 12TF GPU minimum although something closer to the 40TF that Nvidia is promising with Volta would be more of a real leap, they need 128GB of RAM, and an SSD that is large enough, and fast enough to fill that RAM. All of this needs to be done at the $400 price tag people have come to accept for a console. This is unless people start to put more value behind consoles. If consumers are willing to pay $800 for a beefed up PS5 in 2019 - 2020, then the next gen could start way before I am antcipating.

I just don't think Sony and Microsoft can convince people to put down more than $400, even if these boxes become more versitle and see high usage than PC's, tablets, or Laptiops.

Can you maybe explain why we need 40TF of GPU power, 128GB of ram and a few TB of SSD's?

Are we trying to run a Pixar/Dreamworks renderfarm at Imax resolutions or just a "next-generation" console?

Just a next gen console. That kind of Power, Memory, and Storage is required to make truly next gen games. This being games that actually have more immersive worlds, games that are built on new rendering techniques, games that change the way we play and the way games are developed.

If PS5 is a unit with a 6TF GPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 4TB 5400RPM HDD, then it is only going to be able to handle games on the same scale as we have on PS4, all you will see is higher resolution, and maybe a little better effects and textures. A unit like that will struggle to hit 4k/30fps in most games, and will not do anything to change the gaming landscape.

That is why minor increases are going to start happening, like the PS4K/4.5/Spec 2 or whatever. They give people the option to upgrade to newer tech that enhances the picture quality, smoothness, and overall funtion of the device and its games. This allows Sony and Microsoft to keep the brand and the platform fresh for a longer period of time, while allowing tech to make greater advances until a true next generation device can be made, that completely changes the way we play.

Another way to look at this is, what would a PS4 look like if we had such a minor change in 6 years? Well you are looking at a GPU that is about equvilent to the XBO's 1.3TF, you'd have about 1GB of RAM, and a 120GB 5400RPM HDD. Would you have considered PS4 next gen with those specs? Hell, some people say XBO isn't even next gen due to not being able to handle 1080p in most games, and being stuck at 720/900p in many cases. So would you really consider a PS5 that struggles to reach 4K, and plays most games in 1440p, and in the worst cases 1080p/60fps a truly next gen console?

Next-gen is a stupid marketing term. Nothing is next-gen, those things are called "unreleased products".

I still can't belive how people and even news sites are still naming Xbox One/PS4 "next-gen". Those consoles have 4 year old hardware at this time. The 7870 in the PS4 was released on March 4 in 2012.

It would be best if there was a new generation of consoles every 4 years. And no games made for "last-gen" once the new consoles are released.

Now developers are seriously holded back by consoles, especially Xbox One. That's why games like Hellblade won't come out for it.

If you remember correctly, the Original Xbox was released in November 2001 and the Xbox 360 was released in November 2005.

Now that's a good releasing schedule to keep gaming evolving.

i think it will make majority games run at 1080p 60fps as a standard, unless some developers pushes their games to another bottleneck and end up using 30fps again, then upscale if it really output in 4k resolution

It's not going to run games at a higher resolution than 1080p. It'll play 4K media, but if they make it powerful enough to play higher than 1440p they'll have the steambox problem.

Too expensive for console audience, too basic and non-customizable for the PC audience.

its possible dueto the smaller size of the AMD APU. They could double the performacne at 500$~ price tag next year

Not happening. What do you expect a $400 piece of hardware to do?

PS4 isn't running games at anything higher than 1080p unless they want to sell a box that costs close to a grand.

I was thinking that N would use the 14 nm chip for NX to own PS4 in terms of price (smaller chip = you get more chips from a single wafer and save big money), but I see that Sony isn't going to give N any extra chances.

If you actually analyzed the news about Polaris, you'd know that AMD isn't going for a huge jump in performance right now. They are focusing on power efficiency. That's why I think we can forget about 4K gaming. The console will be able to output 4K media (display port 1.3?), but I think we're all going to be happy if we finally hit 1080p/60fps with better details in every game. For a low price.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.
