Initially, most of the Russian attention was on the northwest of Syria. But guess who dominates that area? Jabhat Al-Nusra, AKA Al-Qaeda in Syria. So it was in a way nice of the Russians to attack those that did so much harm to America don't you think?

With regards to Palmyra, as already noted it is located in central Syria to the east of Homs. It was also a major stronghold that with the aid of the Russians the Syrians have been able to take back. So kudos to anyone that's effectively able to take ISIS on.

@OP - If true, a brave act by the soldier and RIP regardless.

To the hundreds of ISIS minions that were just erased during the liberation of Palmyra, rest in pieces :)

Look, it's a fact that Russia entered Syria and attacked the anti-Assad rebels, but knowing the importance of propaganda and PR war, they sent around 10% of their bombs at ISIS and made sure to point every single one of those attacks to the Western media. Lets put this one to rest once and for all - in Syria, Russia is not fighting on the side of the West. They have their own agenda that's contrary to ours and no, they are not helping us. We are pulling the line against each other and despite the fact that we're not shooting at each other, Russia and the West are on the other sides of this war.

Listen, If next bomb will explode in Warsaw, will it be so important for you who blow it up, Al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, DAISH or some other name made up by media?

And YES, Russia don't fight on the side of West in Syria. Russia fights on its own side. And I think thats normal. You know, if country is independant, it has its own international agenda. Unlike former USSR-minions, who dropped one dark master to serve another one.

News flash genius! They don't have to fight on your side to fight against terrorists... Last time I checked, they are fighting both...

Russia has faught ISIS the whole time. They have also attacked other rebel groups. It seems Russia understands that Assad moving out would create a major power vacuum. Its a matter choosing the devil you know over the one you dont.

Assad may be bad. But it does not take much of an imagination to picture something worse coming into power in that part of the world.

Of course Putin likes Assad. Assad is much like Putin. Besides the Assad regime is a significant client of Russia buying munitions and petroleum products from them.

The West Also liked assad. Sure he is a dictator like so many but he had an country where people could live together and their were minor issues between Cristians/Muslims and others groups. It was also popular by tourists and had a steady economic growth. Sure their were issues but people were expecting a nice future... I don't like that Russia works together with Assad but don't like the hypocrisy of the West Either.

See to Libya we worked years with Qaddafi, and we applauded when people got rid of him....And then we let the population suffer, the people are so pissed against the west.....   Isis loved it and send some people to gather soldiers to fight with ISIS but the hate was so big against the West that ISIS just stayed and opened a new Isis branch in Libya and in no time took over parts of the country and has now thousands of soldiers.

What is even worse that the West asked Libian forces to stop the refugees boats while ISIS is loving this and sends refugee boats and don't stop them and only ask some amount of money that will be invested in ISIS.

I don't think anyone claimed that Russia doesn't have an agenda or is not pursuing its own national interests.

However,  where I disagree is that what Russia is doing is against western interests, at least when it comes to fighting ISIS and Nusra(Al-Qaeda).

Sure they are supporting Assad but when it comes to dead jihadis it is a win-win scenario.

I can see why you may view Russia as the enemy as a Pole but the situation in Syria is a lot more complicated than for example in the Ukraine.

News flash genius! They are fighting people we support and are supporting people we are fighting against. The fact that every once in a while they'll also shoot at someone who we are fighting against doesn't change the fact that they are hurting what we're trying to accomplish there and are only making matters worse. This isn't a war against terror on their part, they don't give a flying f*** about it and that's why they've barely done anything against the terrorists there. They want to keep their control over Syria, because it's the only country in the region (both Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea) they have a chance of controlling and later on using - Syria is a Middle Eastern/Mediterranean Cuba for them. Where is their navy going to be stationed in the Mediterranean if they lose Syria? If Russia loses Syria, their international position and possibility to influence other countries is going to drop significantly - that's why they are fighting there, not because of some terrorists that they (together with Iran) helped to train in the first place. The West is fighting against Russia in Syria, don't get fooled about it for even one second, only we're not shooting at each other, instead we're killing our proxies over there. Why do you think when you see news about the negotiations of peace in Syria it's always Kerry vs Lavrov sitting against each other and doing the negotiating? That's the REAL conflict in Syria.

Such BS stories like the one in OP and tales of how the heroic Russians are fighting terrorist more efficiently than the West are meant to confuse people and undermine the position of the Western governments. Russian propaganda 101. It's shocking to me just how effective it is on you.

Also - do you know which part of Syria the majority of immigrants in Europe is from? NW. Yup. The same part that Russians have been bombing for months. If you think they have nothing to do with the flood of muslims in Europe, you're naive as a little child. The West is killing their economy, so in turn they are drowning the West with muslims.

It's not about seeing Russia as an enemy (which they obviously are). Just as I'm not going to teach you about the Aborigines and their antics, being Polish I understand their policy, mentality and their goals far better than you. I know their propaganda, their ways, things that you simply don't understand are absolutely transparent to me. It goes with being born and raised in this region and being part of this ethnic and cultural group. It's a similar case to knowing your sibling far better than anyone else.

The situation in Syria would have been far better, had Russia not entered it. A dead terrorist here and there won't change that fact.

I thought by trying to find some middle ground you could see the light but evidently you are consumed by your Russophobia.

We can pretend to know what would happen in Syria had the Russians not intervened. However I contend that without Russia's aid, the Syrian government would have collapsed and the Islamic State would fill the vacuum and eventually conquer the rest of Syria. How exactly would that be in the interest of the west? At the very least, Russia's intervention has preserved the central authority. We have seen what happens when governments are unilaterally toppled in the cases of Libya and Iraq. In Iraq's case the overthrow provided a conducive environment for what would become the Islamic state to take root.

As for Europe don't worry about lecturing me as I too was born and raised there. It just so happened that I ended up moving to Australia while I was young. Unfortunately smaller nations will always be the pawns of the great powers. In the case of Poland they have merely switched one master for another which is a shame because it had the potential to be a strong independent state following the collapse of the Warsaw pact.

In any case, the priority for all sides should be the destruction of the Islamic state followed by negotiations towards a political settlement. Hopefully it can happen sooner rather than later.

Being anti-Assad rebels doesnt necessarily make them the good guys,a lot of them turned into IS or fight for the same cause as IS.

The west giving weapons to them in the past is one of the reasons why IS is using those to fight us now.

So let me get this straight, you're telling me there's only one good side in this fight? Really?

Russian propaganda has nothing to do with it, but since I am tired of "West this, West that" and would rather see the idea of "duh West" thrown out of the window altogether, I always welcome the emergence of alternatives. We shouldn't please everyone and not everyone should like us. That's how the world goes around...
