Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nikkei: Nintendo ceasing Wii U production at the end of the year

So this pretty much cements that the vita will/is selling more units than the wiiu

Sounds about right. It's arguably the biggest console failure in recent time as it sold at a slower rate than the Dreamcast.

I doubt sega sold as much first party titles tough

The only thing that saves it from being a complete failure is that it was sold for profit. The Dreamcast was sold at a loss, and only kept hemorrhaging money from Sega, eventually causing them to drop out of the console business. Not only that, Nintendo is one of the most intelligent companies when it comes to saving, so they have piles of backup money that they are just sitting on, they are in no danger financially. Going by sheer NUMBER of sales however, the Wii U was a failure, but still outsold the Dreamcast by a few million. The funny thing is, each sold poorly for different reason, at the time, the Dreamcast was just ahead of its era, it was TOO advanced, whereas the Wii U is too under-powered and under-advanced. No one understood how the Dreamcast was going to be relevant, and yet next gen, all of its ideas were utilized by essentially all consoles. Contrastly, the Wii U is easy to figure out, but just isn't what people were expecting/wanting, causing many to turn their backs on it.

I find this whole thing ironic, because there really are some of Nintendo's best made titles on the Wii U maybe in their lifetime with each respective game, but people won't buy it because they know there is no 3rd party support and they know that it is not as powerful as the other two consoles.

You know what it just doesn't make any sense but I believe Nintendo lost its sense anyways as I just checked and the WiiU is 330$ here, that's 20$ less than what I paid for my xbone, hell with the extra game and the 50$ store card the xbone was actually cheaper so yeah Nintendo doesn't make any sense anymore to me. They should have cut the price of the WiiU a while ago.

Still I love the WiiU and its maybe my favorite console of all time but I paid 250$ for a new unit that a guy won, still sealed, at that price its a great system.

They actually make perfect sense. Maybe not in the traditional way other console makers are doing it, but they are making money on each WiiU sold. Why lower the price and lose more money?

Because people buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games. Dont you think they would make even more money if more people would buy the consoles and the exclusives?

Look guys I know it hurts but the facts are slowly but surely becoming undeniably real. Production has halted and that cements the Wii U as the biggest fiasco since the Dreamcast.

It not hurts. It just the thruth and people need to accept it asap.

I still want both the 3DS and the WiiU. Hearing that the WiiU will end production still isn't enough for me to buy it before the 3DS. Hopefully there will be a fire sale on WiiUs.

You sure about that? They were making a loss on each console when it launched and IIRC they still haven't actually said otherwise, despite some people incorrectly assuming they had.

You are spot on. To be profitable on launch it needed to sell 1-2 copies of games alongside.

I hope the NX bring a new gaming experience like the Wii brought us, because if its just a WiiU with better graphics and interface I'm afraid this won't be enough for Nintendo.

Well Sony and MS has had success that way...

True but they have full support from developpers, while Nintendo not so much.
