Forums - Sony Discussion - Evolution Studios Closed

Team ICO will likely join them next year.

Nah. Team ICO could be scratching their belly the whole eight gen like they did on the seventh and Sony wouldn't dare to close them.

Well if you look at the post above yours, you will see that some member of Evolution have formed a new studio and have a exclusive developmental deal with Sony for PSVR and in their PR statement they said they'll reallocate some developers to other projects.

Which is no different to what Liomnhead employees could have done and still could should they wish.

There is no difference.

A studio closed and employees were let go in both cases.

Huh, I didn't know that letting go and reallocating developers to other projects are the same thing ...

You have to love Sony. Getting all the love for their effort to help Lionhead developers find new homes within their studios without committing to really anything then weeks later go ahead and close one of their studios and still reap public opinion without actually doing anything different.

Man this thread is totally different then the Lionhead closure. I have to give it to Sony Marketing and communications. Those people really understand the gaming community and how to make them eat dog food all the while calling it steak.

It can happen within a span of few hours....till the last day, Lionhead guys didn't know that they were getting shut

Oh there were people at Lionhead that new they were getting shut down, its usually the people that run the business because shutting down a studio doesn't happen in days, it happens in months leading up to the closure.  There really is no difference when it comes to this type of stuff.  No company is above the rest when it comes to having to close a studio.  The fact of the matter is that neither Sony, Nintendo or MS are altruristic, bevenolent companies.  They do not keep running businesses in the Red like some people assumed in other threads.  Instead these are corporations that need to stay in the black and make hard decisions when parts of their business run in the red.

What we see from this closure is that Sony is willing to make the hard decision just like any other business even if it has negative tones but the true strength of Sony is that they can still come out smelling like a rose.

SCEE is a train wreck. First studio Liberpool, now evolution studios. What do they want from these studios?! Its rdiculous how they release good titles and get closed.

I knew this was coming. I think the developers rushed it, and didn't polish the server side of the game.

I wouldn't put it down to Sony marketing. Lionhead was a staple MS studio. Fable was a huge franchise and when they axed Lionhead it caught everyone including the staff there off-guard.

With Evo, they seemed to have known about it and it shows Sony has offered them to relocate internally where possible and they are helping find other jobs.

Knowing and not knowing still does not make the situation any different.  A closure is a closure and most companies will relocate the people who they want to keep and not the rest.  I have been on both sides of the fence where the company was bought out and we did not find out until it was reported on the BBC and a straight closure.  In both situations the parent company kept the people they wanted and the others were left with options.  Most options involved severance packages that are pretty generous in helping you stay afloat while you look for other employment.  I believe if the company find you new employment they do not have to pay you’re a severance package which probably is more a cost saying maneuver than anything else.

thats sad to hear.. makes you wonder what they were expecting from Driveclub.. they already cut 50 people a year ago..

Frankly, a killer app that reinforced Sony's new attention to online play; what they got was a PR disaster, customers questioning their competence and reliability.

Should have made a next gen Motorstorm instead of that Driveclub junk.

This is what happens when you go all in on higher and higher budgeted projects. Yoshida has gone on record saying bg budget successes like Uncharted allow for these "riskier" games to be made (not sure why one of the two racing games on PS4 should be a risk in ANY regard), but this continues to be the case for many PS exclusive studios over recent years - particularly since 2011.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

The authors of WRC games and Motorstorms closed? This gen $ucks @ss!
