I wish you the best and I hope you will love USA ;)

I wonder if it is true that people spent a lot of time working and have much less vacations in USA compared to Europe.

I often pictured americans like people that work too much and don't enjoy life enough. I even heard that often in USA people are afraid to take lunch break because of their boss. However this sounds like total cliché to me.

In the future I will maybe need to leave Europe for some years and this is one of the points that scares me.

Depends on your job, location (different regions have different concepts of "hard work"), and experience. Don't worry many Americans know how to relax and have fun. Often we take it to the other extreme. As for the lunch thing, I have never heard of that. Albeit I have worked mostly low waged entry level jobs while in school. Maybe it is different for certain white collar positions, but people who choose am occupation in corporate positions probably should expect competitiveness. I personally don't view that as the life for me and chose a different route(academia.)

Congrats OP! If your in financing I suggest moving to a place like Charlotte, North Carolina once you've got your footing. It's the second biggest financial hub in the US and it's a really clean city. It's the perfect blend of big city and rural life. Since the city only started growing recently all the buildings (houses, shopping centers, downtown, etc.) are new and not run down like other big cities. The people are all really nice too. Even working retail I never really ran into any jack asses while I was there which is a miracle.

Honestly the only downside is that the city is growing so fast that roads haven't been upgraded to handle that many residents. At least not yet.

I may have left the U.S. years ago, but welcome anyways! (I am a Michigan-born Canadian). The government is corrupt, and the rich try to screw the majority to get richer, but hopefully you will find many great people and have many great experiences to make up for it!

It's a shame that a lot of the old guard have left, back in the day it was quite well-known that it was my dream/goal to move to the US.

It's taken me a long time and many attempts, and I finally decided to take the Masters route. My girlfriend lives in NYC (well, technically, NJ), so I applied to a handful of schools in the area. I received my first accept a couple hours ago, it was for one of my safer schools. There are a few results I haven't heard back from yet, which I am nervous about. At the end of the day, though, I finally get a real shot at living in the US.

It's a shame I have to take this route, though. I'm exceptionally talented at what I do. However, due to America's broken immigration system, no employer would look at me until I had several more years experience under my belt. The structure almost forces young talented people through the University system.

One of the reasons why your tuition fees are so high is because you're being outbid by the Chinese and Indian 1% who just want a shot at living in a far better country, and they're willing to work hard and go through hell for it.

(I'm not Chinese or Indian, my gf is Chinese though).

Why is it your dream to live in the US?

Good for you, man.

In regards to the claims of racism in this thread, I'm a black dude who's lived in rural and suburban Texas most of my life, and have never had the displeasure of running into a racist, overt or otherwise. Experiences differ.

I don't recommend anyone moves here, though, because the summers are literally hell.

Texas has the most polite racists.

I am so very sorry. Truly, I am.

On a serious note, welcome and stay away from Florida. There is only crazyness down there.
