Forums - General Discussion - I'm Moving to America :-)

I would have waited until after the presidents election to see what happens to the US. Looking at discriminating and racistic Trump and his nutjob followers, it could turn out really bad.
But as long as you are white, you shouldn't have any issues...

It's always great to add productive members from other countries to the US. Hope you enjoy it and congrats!

Thanks dude

no disrespect but why the hell would you ever want to move to America?
a country of racism, mass murders, patriotism, obsession with guns, persecution of minority groups, corruption, huge student debt, crap justice system, the list goes on.

but each to there own.

The media paints one picture. Reality paints another. There's a lot of things wrong with it. There's poor areas and crime ridden areas but, as a whole, it's great. I've never gone someplace and not felt safe. Don't let the bad parts make the whole country look bad.

Oh, I did live in Atlanta back in the late 90s.  That place was crazy! Nothing bad actually happened to me but I wouldn't recommend living there. It's like living on "Hard mode". I recommend starting in a nice, rural " easy mode "area.

That actually scares me. Truth be told, the country probably runs itself but I fear what a Trump presidency could bring. I'll just leave it at that.

Let's not get into this properly, but let's face it, Trump has the entire donor class against him. Congress is going to shut him down at every step. It's not like Bush or Obama where the President and Congress were all on the same team - the Goldman Sachs team.

How much is your health insurance, or how much does you and your employer pay for it, and then how much per year is your co pay, max out of pocket and co insurance + deductable? How much is it to attend a University for a year in Georgia? How much are property taxes on a 1,200 sq ft 3 bed 2 bath house? Georgia is a lot different to NJ too. But you can't tell me there is no racism there. I'm also guessing that everything applies except the racism.

-No idea what my health insurance is. My company provides it. I just pay like $30 out of pocket whenever I've gone.

-I have a great job. Made almost $75k last year and didn't even go to college. I joined the Airforce instead. Got out, became a cop, and then applied for a job at a nuclear power plant and got it. AND I'm among the lowest paid people there.

-I carry my wallet everywhere I go. I sit outside on my porch at night and look at the stars. I own my own land and I'm buying my own house. Should be paid off in about a decade.

-The only debt I have is my home and basic utilities. Everything else is paid off except for my fiance's (she's white) engagement ring. I can pay it off right now but I like how the money looks in my bank account.

-I rarely, if ever, get sick. Sorry. My daughter (with my ex--she's black) goes to the hospital all of the time, though. Almost weekly. She has "Peach Care" so it's not expensive at all.

-Never been beaten up by a racist. People seem to love me and they're pretty nice. Not saying it didn't exist. I just don't see it, personally.  Then again, I don't go looking for it.

-I love meat. I may eat too much of it. My fiance is an excellent cook.

-I own an acre of land. My taxes were about $900 last year. 4 bedroom, two bath. Well water.

-*edit*: I made a thread a long time ago called "What's the poorest you've ever been".  My family was dirt poor. I just kept a good attitude, worked hard at every job I ever had, and avoided stupid mistakes. I can pay virtually all of my bills in a single paycheck. My fiance dropped out of school, went back and got her GED, and she's successful, too.  The only thing keeping me from moving into a better home is that I have a 30 year mortgage that began in the year 2000 and I don't want to rent my home out and haven't tried a realtor. It'll probably happen soon, though.

Again, I'm not very religious but I do feel blessed!

D21lewis you seem like the most level headed person on this thread. All this racism blah blah blah crap from people gets on my nerves. Of course there are racists here but it's nothing like some people seem to think and the people who cry about racism are usually the racist. America is a beautiful country and the only places you have to be rich to live are very liberal cities like NYC or LA. I live south of dallas tx so I guess you could call me some dumb red neck but I don't care. I love it here and I can afford to pay for my family with little college education, two kids a stay at home wife, a house payment and toys like four wheelers. You know how because I work hard for what I have and I don't whine about stupid shit like racism and free this and equality that but I'm sure some of you won't care because I'm just some dumb racist redneck right?

I concur. My biggest worry is him disrespecting other countries. I fear him "putting up walls" (not even literally) rather than building bridges. No matter how tough the US may be, were significantly less without our allies.

Some of you scare me.

As a kid I lived on nearly ten acres of land.
Moved from West to Tennessee and had an acre of land, was pretty chill area.

Now I live in a 3 story town house on the edge if the Chicago suburbs. Do not even lock my doors. Car doors never get locked. Do not worry about guns, schools have a police officer but that is it. But that is because we are cracking down on bullying hard.

And the political system matters little. Anyone who is elected is going to try something shady. Congress will piss and moan and everyone will piss and moan until something that resembles what it was originally will be voted through. Every system is the same. There is always some who are in it for the greed and power and because of that it will always be tainted.

Schools are what ever you put into them. Public schools included.

Nothing is as bad as the internet says it is. I have been middle class, poor, and extremely poverty stricken. Never rich yet or upper class.

None of those class tiers were ever horrible though. To be honest, unless you are on drugs, which even that has programs, I do not understand how anyone is homeless or hungry in America. There are plenty of jobs, just not any that anyone wants to do. Seriously. Every business I drive past seems to have a help wanted in the Windows and not just minimum wage.

Anyways, rant about America over. I guess I always thought you were from America. My bad. Welcome!

Yeah that is the problem, nothing you understand is really changing.   Happening in the background.   Rich are obtaining more and more of our nation's total wealth.  Will have another 2008 economic crash sooner than later.   Simply not enough money being circulated in the economy.  Makes its way top, and  tends to slow down there.  Meanwhile more and more people are relying on government welfare to live as the prices of living continues to rise and the war on wages continues.
Our country is a pile of shit right now.  At least Colorado and cities like Seattle are taking things into their own hands and actually becoming progressive.  Quality of life is going up and their economies are booming in many areas.  Very attractive places to move to.
Oh and you need to realize you will go over 50 grand in debt to get a degree that pays well.  And degrees are pretty much required as most places won't care about your talents without that piece of paper.

Buy yeah, welcome to America.  its an okay place.

I think one of the more ignorant things I see on forums is when people try to paint the United States as one experience. Living in one state or city can be radically different from living in another. It's a massive country. Economics, attitudes, and cultural makeup can differ greatly.

Also, I just saw 93% lean ground beef for $4.39 a pound. I didn't buy it, though, because ground chicken is cheaper and healthier.

As far as Trump being elected President, I'm guessing a lot of people don't realize that the President has very limited powers and Trump couldn't do half of what he has promised. He's even talked about changing laws that aren't even federal, which isn't going to happen unless Congress lets him rewrite the Constitution.

Hey, congratulations! That's really big news!

I live in California so I don't know how they are in NJ/NYC but I'm sure you'll find some amazing and friendly people there too. Best of luck!
